Stopping power needs to be factored in with load also. Stopping the 4600# is more effort with 1/2 than 3/4 or 1 ton. Even with brakes on trailer. Untrue. With proper trailer brakes, there is no difference at all. None. Dad pulls a 12K fifth wheel with a half ton with no issues at all because he doesn't drive that fast and his equipment is fine. Truck doesn't stop the trailer, the trailer does. 4600 is NOTHING for a properly equipped half ton.
Pass the gravy.

True, 4600# is within 1/2 ton capability ( I don’t have trailer brakes on the pipe trailer ) but a 3/4 ton stops it better
It’s just not gonna be something you will want to tow with a half ton at highway speed limits up and down hills all day.
12k with a half ton may be possible with air bags or a unique set up, but it’s more than likely not going to be able to maintain a posted highway speed.
Go to the Florida keys, they pull offshore boats with 4 door jeeps and Ford Rangers…but they never see over 45 mph.

Dad's is a 2014 with a 6.2L gas engine, the 6' 6" bed (long for a crew cab 1500), Firestone airbags, and a decent hitch with good trailer brakes. It's 10 years old and almost all it's 90K miles have been pulling. It maintains highway speed but doesn't go 75 MPH with that load and he wouldn't with 5K pounds either. Neither would I even though I would drive 100 without a trailer. A 2500 would absolutely NOT stop better because his trailer brakes work properly to stop the trailer.
Pass the gravy.

Well that’s a given, but if you take away the trailer brakes, which truck is gonna stop it better? I think the point you’re trying to get across is that a 1/2 ton is adequate for some people’s needs. I can agree with you, but will add that it’s not adequate for everyone’s needs.

Well that’s a given, but if you take away the trailer brakes, which truck is gonna stop it better? Off topic and meaningless to the discussion. But with no trailers, the 1500 stops better as it's 1500 pounds (minimum) lighter with great brakes. How far into the weeds do we get now? I fix these for a living.
Pass the gravy.

75-85mph is where my Cummins likes to run with the cruise set and the RZR on a double axle trailer. I ran 85mph for 18 hours from Forney, Tx to Sedona, Az last September. Truck & trailer never missed a beat or complained.
Having that power to pull the hills in OD while getting 13-14mpg is why I prefer a diesel.

But typing stuff that ain't true by physics is usually not ignored. I debated even responding to that but Redchevy was referencing another thread where I had ordered a 1500 AT4 with the 3.0 diesel and then changed it to a 2500. Nowhere in this thread did I ever state that “ half tons can’t tow”. I didn’t even bring up towing with trailer brakes, that was 68Rustbucket. Beyond that, I have nothing else to say other than bumpers are scheduled to go on tomorrow. First edition 2024 from Frontier, ranch hand does not have a summit series out yet for GM 2500’s or 3500’s. Will post pics after they are on

Front end is on. They sent a rear bumper for a 1500 instead of a 2500 so have to get that ordered and sprayed. Gonna level the front end as well, this bumper put a hair more sag in it than I like.

My apologies I didn’t mean to derail anything! I do think you made the right choice for you. I don’t think you would be happy with the performance of the 1500. Would it do what you want? I bet so, but think you would have to run it harder than you would want to in order to do it. Nice trucks. My dad has a 2018 HO Cummins and brother a 2024 3500 d-max. From what I’ve seen neither one has an ounce of back down.

Looks good Brandon. As much as I like the looks, and really wanted, you’ve pretty well talked me out of an AT4X or any other Duramax for that matter

Ran into some issues installing the front end, and the factory sent the wrong rear bumper, so gonna be a few weeks on that. Thursday taking it back into shop to trim the fender carpets, crank the torsion bars back to factory height and adjust the front camera.

There is a fiber board on the inside of the fenders used for sound deadening. The factory bumper came down a lot lower than this aftermarket bumper so it needs to be trimmed up, the shop ran out of time yesterday and I needed it today and tomorrow for work.

are those tires GY DuraTrac? Yes. Duratrac M/T Just stand for moderate terrain because it sure isn’t a mud tire. But, it performs good on street and dirt/gravel. I doubt I’ll put mud tires on this one. Looking to go back to Yoko Geolander X/AT’s after these wear out

We installed the first front end replacement bumper on the newest 2500 yesterday so I guess they're finally going to be available. GM calls the "carpets" fender liners and it's a GMC not a Chevy. No, they're not the same. If they were, F*** wouldn't be able to claim best selling for 50 years.
Pass the gravy.

I had to wait about 2 months for Frontier to build this one as they had not started production on them yet, ranch hand has the heavy pipe bumpers out but not the lighter diamond plate model summit. I’ve started seeing a ton more GM trucks on the road in the last 3-4 years. Ford Superduty still outnumbers the HD’s but as far as half tons go the GMC seems to be the most popular with a few Chevy s sprinkled in. I still see a lot of F-150’s in the road but it’s not a complete domination of that class like it was a few years back. GM really upped their game with the Sierra and Silverado trucks, especially the off road Specific trims

Took it back to the shop, they adjusted the torsion bars to account for the sag and trimmed the fender liners. Looks much better. I’m pretty much done with mods for the truck now, gonna leave it more or less stock aside from the rear bumper replacement. Goal is to get 150,000 trouble free miles out of this one and go from there. I’m hoping the front end will hold up. We will see. 14,800 on the ODO now.

I put one on my 1500 AT4 with a ReadyLift leveling kit and really like it. Now i just need bigger tires as these Goodyear's are too small and loud! Also saw a 2500 AT4X at the dealer and very impressed as it was so good looking.

We have a couple AT4X 1500's that came in Friday. I think we have an AT4X 2500 too...
They could have sold Saturday though. They don't last.
