Looks middle eastern/central Asian to me. Saw many of this type Iin my travels as a G.I., usually tucked into a belt or scarf wrapped around the waist next to an AK mag. I would think a Japanese blade would likely have a tight fitting habaki over the roccosso area as opposed to the rudimentary joining of the blade to the guard and handle. Do you have a bacstoryto it at all ? Many knives from this area carry the patina seen on this one without being particularly old.

It's been in this closet for a long time. My grandfather and mom live in Japan for a while in the 40's

Wish I had some photos of blades I brought back from Afghanistan that really resemble this one. I gave away all of them to different folks.
