Ok, the reason I said Trophy Buck is because most people's Trophy is a big mature Buck. I am currently shooting Hornady Persision Hunter 125 gain and my 6.5 Creedmoore loves them. I use it on hogs and Does with head shots. Not worried about messing up a mount. Myself like everyone else hates to have to track and possibly lose an animal. When it comes to a big/Trophy Buck I switch to my 30.06 because the knock down power and shot right behind the front leg for the double lung/heart shot placement. I love the 6.5 Creedmoore and was wondering if the 125 grain bullet would have the knock down power to keep from having to track the buck. You see the property I hunt is only 79 acres so it is very possible that if he makes it 400 yrds in a side direction he could go on someone else's property. I would just like to avoid that. Thanks for the comments in advance.

I'm guessing the OP says Trophy Buck as opposed to a meat hunt insinuating that you are going to do a shoulder shot on a trophy instead of turning his head into a canoe? confused2

I like the 143eldx simply because my 6.5 is set up more as a long range target gun than hunting. The same load serves double duty there. I have used it for hunting, and continue to do so occasionally. I'm sure that a 129 or 120gr would work as well. At the hunting range (100-200 yards) that most people shoot deer, it probably won't make a bit of difference as long as you do your part.

Just saw that you answered the "trophy buck question". They don't make Precision Hunter in 125gr in 6.5 Creedmoor. Can you double check your ammo?

I'm sorry you are right it is the Winchester Deer Season XP in 125 grain. The Persision Hunter is my sons 270 ammo and it is 145 grain.

Looks like a standard cup and core bullet with a plastic tip. I would think that would suffice just fine as long as you make a good hit.

I shoot 123 sst out of my Grendel and drop everything from pigs- deer even aoudad. I have a couple of friends that I load 140grain sst for the creed. Since the switch they drop in their tracks.

I have a .277 Wolverine, I have different ammo at different grains, but I can shoot one in the neck and at 100-125 yards it runs through them plumb smooth, very small hole going in and out. I could probable still shoulder mount one with a neck shot. I killed a deer this year that I know I shot in the neck and wouldnt have been able to find where it went in and out without the blood trickling out.

I hunt a property way smaller than that am always worried about the same fence jumping tracking issue such as yours and run the horandy precision hunter thru my .308 (i think it’s a little higher grain than your 125) and have had great success. And maybe I’m just lucky but If the doe/buck havent dropped they haven’t gone over 20-30 yards .I am no expert but If you have to track those boogers over 400 yards it would be a shot placement issue not a bullet issue .

I shot a buck this year with 129 grain power points from a 6.5 needmoor and was not impressed with the performance. Buck ran over 100 yards and no blood trail from a perfect heart/lung shot. I would not own a rifle in this caliber but I won it in a raffle and I don't look gift horses in the mouth. Its a super accurate cartridge, I just found it unimpressive on game. Shoot your trophy buck with a 270 or 3006 and be done with it.

In 6.5x55 the ~140 grain range is the best all around for sectional density/bc/energy etc, no need for anything lighter. Can move up to 156 for shorter range bigger game. I imagine 6.5 Creedmoor is just the same, the whole advantage of 6.5x55 and 6.5 Creedmoor is being able to shoot those longer, heavier bullets.

I recovered this from a central TX doe. She was quartering hard away (more than I thought) at 185 yards. Bullet entered the near side just at the last rib and was underneath the hide at the point of the offside shoulder. She was DRT other than a few flops. Internals were pretty well destroyed. 143gr ELDX, Dallas Reloads 'Speedmoor' load.

15 seconds later I shot another of her group at 285 yards, broadside. Complete pass through, she went about 40 yards. A gray fox was standing on her when we got there about 20 minutes later and barked at us for taking his prize.

I only say 400 yrds because that is the distance to the fence line that a really good game trail is However the closest fence line is only 54 yrds through Farley thick oak trees. The 2 Does that I shot with it this year were DRT in their tracks. One was broad side and the other a head shot. I noticed though that that board side shot was slightly quartering away and the bullet stop when it hit the front shoulder. Thatbis whatvhas me concerned about shot a big Buck that I would like to shoulder mount with it. I would think that I would get the same DRT results on him too. Just not sure since they are a bit thicker and tuffer than a Doe.

wont matter if you high shoulder he will drop. You can do the same thing with a 223.

I have only shot game with the factory loaded Hornady 143 grain ELD-X out of my 6.5 CM rifles. Two axis, one blackbuck, three pronghorn, and one whitetail, so not a big sample size. All lung shots, and none have made it past 30 yards after the shot. Shots from 50-270 yards. I don’t see any reason to look for a different bullet.

120 ELD Match has worked for me for the last several seasons. 120 Amax before that.

Sounds good.

I also shoot the 143 grain Precision Hunter. Probably 20 animals with it now, if seems to be very effective.
I have never lost a deer but I have noticed that it does not give a big exist wound, usually no bigger than the bullet itself.

Id shoot the 143 ELDX or a 140 Berger and aim square in the shoulder.

I just saw the question but don't have time to read thru all the comments........ So I'll just wade into this with both feet. First a little background. The 6.5 is a great target rifle (very accurate). We discourage any of our paying guests to use a 6.5 unless its a PRC. Our experience has been they don't bleed out until they fall over and then pool out and virtually none of the shots have been DRTs. We end up tracking or calling Roy to bring his dogs. Same scenario on 5 muley's in Utah a couple of years ago. Took three days to find all the bucks. Most hunters when excited can't make DRT shots especially with a 6.5 C. Their excited and in the moment.

If they have a PRC then our bullet of choice is the Hornady 143 gr ELDX. Absolute devastation in the chest cavity or it will take part of a hogs head off. My two cents since I've seen it in action on the ranches I guide on plus our family place.

It's the Indian and not the arrow. I'll kill game with the 6.5 CM all day long. One must know his equipment and practice. Did I mention practice, oh I did my bad.

That's one of the dumbest things I've read on the subject in a long time.
