On the opposite side of this issue are the ones running with no lights. It boggles the mind. I'll see little dark colored cars with no lights on when visibility is at it's worst. Do these idiots want to get hit?

I think I could get away with running around with my high beams on all the time. When I put a front guard on my truck it dropped it a bit. I never readjusted the headlights and low beams don't give me much sight distance when driving at night.

Might be my problem to. I put a ranch hand bumper on mine when it was new.

I’ve encountered them. They are a danger to other drivers. The most annoying has been meeting someone with a big light bar on. Had to stop in the highway completely blinded.

I have a VSS-1 4200 watt HID searchlight that I would love to mount on my truck to blast people who drive around with their highbeams on. For reference a regular HID headlamp assembly is 15 watts.

Seems to me that a person blinded by headlights, legal or not, is just as likely or more likely to run into the vehicle he is being blinded by. Never knew the measure of a man was how bright his headlights are.

I have no doubt that some headlights are causing accidents and injury. I hate regulations but it's sort of ridiculous these days.

The DOT approved bulb requirement is an administrative violation in the Tx Transportation Code. Much like windshield wipers being in good condition.

not sure if that was directed at me for posting the article but I am anything but a liberal - seems to me the majority of folks on this thread agreed with the article

It isn't. Me wanting to blast someone with a search light for driving with their hi-beams on is just something I like to think about but would never do.

Most halogen capsule bulbs are 50 to 65 watts; there are high output halogen capsule bulbs up to about 120 watts but the increase in lighting isn't linear and the high wattage bulbs tend to overpower the factory wiring and can melt plastic headlamp assemblies. The real problem with non DOT bulbs are the ones with funky colors. White with a color temp of 3500k to 5000k will give the best light output out the front. Bulbs even out of spec ones are not a huge problem because there is only so much that you can stuff in there. Out of spec replacement headlamp assemblies cause huge problems and many of them can't even be aimed properly. I am surprised that TX hasn't passed a law concerning replacement lamp assemblies and not just ones about the bulbs.

This is getting off topic but I have decades of experience with automotive lighting and have spent a small fortune modifying the lights on cars and can tell you what works and what doesn't. If anyone wants advise on lighting upgrades please send me a PM.

State Inspection rules for vehicle "safety" don't always match the traffic laws officers enforce. Federals required new vehicles to be equipped with a CHMSL as of 1986 but it does not have to work to get a safety inspection in TX ... but an officer will surely use a broken or inoperative 3rd brake light as probable cause for a stop if they so desire. I got a written warning a month ago because my tag lights (both operational) were "too dim" (although the officer was driving towards me and made a u-turn to stop me). Not sure what the motor vehicle code is for this but the inspection rules say the tag must be illuminated to be seen from 50 feet. That's not very far at all and my lamps were lit that well for sure but I digress.

No car is required to have a windshield by inspection guidelines (I am licensed) but I must fail a vehicle if the wipers don't make full and complete contact with the non-required windshield throughout travel of the arm(s). So the end result is: If you have a car with no windshield, remove the wiper arms too...

Pass the gravy.

If no windshield, where would you put your inspection sticker?

Funny that gets asked in every licensing class. But there's not been inspection stickers in years either.

Pass the gravy.

You can tell an older vehicle coming at you vs a new one.

It's older yellowish lights that are tolerable vs the blinding white lights of new vehicles!

...!

Construction zone warning vehicles can also be a problem. Those guys get a kick out of adding all kinds of crazy lights, bright ones too. We had one on 1604 the other day that was so bright vehicles were braking so they had better opportunity to negotiate traffic and not run into others. I could barley see the car in front of me had slammed on his brakes.

My wife's Tacoma has great headlights, they are bright but the light sharply cuts off on the top and doesn't shine off in the distance unless on high. Fords are the worst.

I leveled my 2017 F250 a couple years ago. Incoming vehicles started flashing me. I quickly realized I needed to adjust my lights angle. My dad, a retired truck driver told me early on to try not to flash back others who have their high beams on. Could be an older person who can't see good, etc. I think that was fine back in the 80's in East Tennessee but today in metro mess its mostly pricks/dicks.

Oh, they do worse than that! They’re always working on the roads around Midland, and they’ve had some big projects on 20, for awhile. They’ll work at night with light plants, and they’ll have the stupid things pointing straight down the highway.

We don’t have inspection stickers anymore, haven’t had them for a few years
