Apparently it is not that uncommon to have to shoot dangerous game in the act of harming a fellow hunter. On the forum where I first saw this, a couple of instances of having to shoot a leopard off of a hunter were mentioned -- a smaller target in much closer proximity to a human's vitals.

Yes, that could have been tragic. That's the rush of hunting 'em however. Things can turn badly very quickly. Even without the shot, the guy that "rode" him (involuntarily) could have been hurt so much worse, or killed. Those dogs are a hoot. Afrikaners.
