Great advice above....
to recap my experience...
1. you must cut another door for safety and the locking doors in the wind thing, yes a long shot but you are screwed in a fire.
2. A flux core or MIG welder is best...dont stick weld them.
3. The weigh a lot, about 6000 lbs for a 40 foot one and thats with minimal outfitting. Moving is not trivial.
4. My design includes a mud room on the big door end. I build a wall several feet inside and put a door in that wall. Then we pin the steel doors back all weekend. The mud room is where we lock up the generator and anything else we leave there including a ATV.
5. Seal up the gap underneath from snakes etc.
6. Dont go crazy with insulation, say R5 is plenty. It is a small space and heating it up is easy. More insulation than that is a waste.
7. They are sucure if you put plates or bars on the windows while away. This is a big issue in South Texas. I perfer plates on windows and bars over doors.
8. Twenty foot units are fine for a kids rooms or storage but its a waste of time as a cabin unless you are solo or you and missus...
9. I like flourescent lights, since they are cool...not generating a lot of heat.
10. One window unit in each end seems to do the trick. Size depends on where you are....bigger in far south texas or smaller in far west...
11. cost to finish out is in the eye of the beholder. some guys spend weeks in one notch better than cardboard shacks and are happy. Some want a sofa and sat dish. You can do anything to a container.
12. buy a 40 foot if primary quarters and get the tall one, for the extra foot of head room. Well worth it. how do you insulate ?

Our company has done a number of modifications for hunting in the Dallas and fort worth areas. It's a pretty cost effective method for temporary or long term housing. Even our corporate office is a modified shipping container.

A budy of mine has a place with two 10'x10' set paralel to each other and covered breezeway built up with a deck between them. Kitchen and living room on one side and sleeping on the other. It was done very nicely and is like a small home. It isnt movable though, it is set up as a permanent strucure.

I can't remember what I last saw with the link to the home I saw. They took 2 of the 40' ones and welded them side by side, cut an archway between the two and had bedrooms, dining area bath and kitchen, windows, doors etc. The pushed the whole thing into the side of a hill and it was awesome. I just don't have the welding skills or I'd be looking at doing it myself. If I find the link I'll post it.

7ARanch,
I remember pictures of that one going around in an email several years ago. Really cool looking and I especially like that they had covered over half of it with earth for insulation.

I know he had the link on his home computer. I'll get him with later today and see if he still has the link.

Most folks use spray foam insulation in container builds, doesn't take much to make a huge difference.

I just bought one of these to live in while building a home. I bought the Angler 14'x32'. Had it made with no porch. Very good quality and portable. Delivered and setup it was around $24,000. You can custom design your own floor plan also. http://www.morgancabins.com/

Most folks use spray foam insulation in container builds, doesn't take much to make a huge difference. also a good point because if you use regular insulation and put up some sort of wall covering over it, like panel or plywood, you are just asking for condensation to form Remember that steel is a good conductor of heat or cold. If it is cold outside and you heat up the inside, condensation can form on the steel inside. Standard insulation allows for this Spray foam does not let this happen

I want to hear from someone who put a walking deck on the roof of a container. I am trying to decide how to best suspend the frame work
I was thinking of welding 3 or 4 in purlin along the roof edge but I'm not sure

Spray foam insulation on the interior. If you use 2x4's and fiberglass insulation without a true vapor barrier, you will end up with a mold problem. The exterior needs a serious paint job, or stucco. Unless it was a food grade container, the floor is saturated with pesticide and/or fire retardant, rip it out and lay a new floor if you plan to live in there. Stick welding does not work well. Properly frame windows and doors. Crushed gravel base properly compacted and leveled with French drains or the bottom will rust out quickly if you just drop it on the dirt.
Containers can be a great solution, and save quite a bit versus stick frame construction, if you do it right. But if you just want a redneck palace, it will last a few years longer than that scrap lumber and stolen tin super shed that got put up over a weekend and 3 cases of beer. Good lord do the wiring and plumbing up to code or you will have a smelly and dangerous day if it rains.

Out in the desert in California people are making houses out of these things. Like a modular home. These things worked pretty good for housing in Iraq and Afghanistan. They would be excellent for a camp or heck, made into a home. There are a lot of options. That's for sure.

My cousin has contracted out to bury them for "preppers" who want to shelter underground... I would be very care when doing this. If you dont do a lot of work to the inside structure or the outside ground, it will cave in. They aren't made to have pressure places on the sides and top. Hopefully hes going it right, but they will be a death trap if not done correctly.

A lot of people make shipping containers into homes these days.
Mostly hippies and Longhorns, but it's done pretty regularly. Lol. We have one but it's strictly for corn and 4-wheeler storage. The mice can't get in.

I would like to take a 20 footer and build a partition in it..one end for my ranger/corn/tool shelves and a small sleeping quarter on the other end of the partition with a wood stove and a window...has anyone done anything like this?? I would be interested in seeing some pics that are original and not off of a green website etc...
