Those are not half Mil reticles.

They are giving 5.0 Mil, which is old school, typical Mil reticle.

5.0 Mil will get a whole lot of cartridges to 700 yards.

5 mils is huge. That’s like almost 20” @ 100? The subtensions in the TMR measure 0.5 mil. If 0.5 is not half, I am missong something huge.

But 5 mils? How is a 5 mil reticle useful at all?

You're thinking about this all wrong.

6.5 Creedmoor, 140 gr, 2800 fps
100 yards 0
200 yards .4
300 yards 1.0
400 yards 1.8
500 yards 2.6
600 yards 3.6
700 yards 4.7

How's a 5.0 Mil reticle not useful?

And, one Mil is 3.6" at 100 yards. So 1/10 Mil is .36" at 100 yards.

One Mil is 7.2" at 200 yards.

But throw inches out the window. They don't matter. Mil and MOA are both Trig functions. They are both a way to cut a circle into pie pieces. As horizontal distance increases, so does the value of Mil and MOA. Think of them as cones.

If I put a 55 gallon drum at 1000 yards, it's going to be 1.0 Mil tall in a scope. Put the same drum at 500 yards, it's going to be 2.0 Mil tall in a scope. Put it at 100 yards, it's going to be 10 Mils tall in a scope.

And the TMR is in .5 Mil steps.

Burris, Steiner, and Night Force have .2 Mil steps available.

1.2
1.4
1.6
1.8
2.0 and so on

But 1 Mil in all of them is 1 Mil. That's a 300 yard correction for a long list of cartridge and bullet combos.

I understand mils and range estimation with mil dot systems. I have used it. But, what makes this leupold a 5 mil scope, versus a half mil scope, if it has 0.5 mil subtensions? And what criteria must a reticle meet to be called “half mil”. Is this some type of slang that I am missing?

Please believe me when i tell you i understand mils and MOA as well for that matter. I was an 0847 in the corps and 11B in the army- i get it. But what is a half mil if it is not 0.5 mil?

So i need to find a .2 mil scope then, to be competitive. That is hard to look at

You have 5 Mils of holdover in the reticle. That is what he is talking about. The 3-9 has 1 mil dot spacing with the bottom of the post being 5 Mil.

The TMR has .5 Mil hashes with the bottom of the post being 5 mils.

Many opics like the SWFA will have 10 mils of holds in the reticle.

Is a tape measure busy?

Same difference.

And I misunderstood your "half Mil" statement. I thought you were meaning half a reticle. But you were meaning half Mil steps. With a little bit of time behind one, you can create the .1, .2, .3 .4 Mil with your eye.

Many a PRS match has been won by a guy using a Mil reticle in .5 Mil increments. He just had the skillz to go with it.

If you want a duplex reticle, get a scope that has a duplex reticle and enjoy it. I really don't know why anyone would GAF what everyone else thinks, because I sure as hell don't.

Here we go. I am pretty sure that my DD214 is a public record. Look it up inspector gadget

Well i was gonna post something along the lines of roflmmfao but I posted a query looking for advice.

I am probably going to go with a 5 mil half mil dot or 5 mil mil dot scope, probably a leupold, for my .308. I keep raising the bar and the price in my mind, but instead I am gonna try to keep it under $600 and spend my money on ammo and range time instead of more expensive glass. Over time I am sure I will upgrade eventually but what is the point of saving all my money and never shooting my rifle.

But for the .358 I am building, I am probably going to shop for an older used Leupold 3x9 with the slick low profile turret caps.

It is apparent to me that my lack of social skills transcends face to face interactions. Just know this, I appreciate ya’ll. I posted a query and learned some things from ya’ll to help me make a better decision. I appreciate ya’ll.

Never would have considered the .358 Winchester and apparently it’s my dream gun. One of them at least. Never would have considered a mil scope but I found a couple examples of mil reticles I can live with and one that is downright clean and easy on the eyes as the old duplex. My .308 will probably get a 3-9 or 4-12 with mil dot or tmr… or *maybe* even a fire dot TMR. That is still borderline elmer fudd I guess but it’s a nice light weight hunting scope with a useful reticle for long shots. And doesn’t look out of place on the Gen II.

The .308 cartridge never excited me either. I bought one when I was 19 and sold it when I was 20, and never got another until now that I realized it is pretty much essential over the past 5 years. Well now I am having fun with that too. Probably gonna get a .308 for the boy, too.

It looked like you said you were in the army and the marine corps. It just struck me funny. I'm not interested enough to do research on my own. If you don't want to answer the question, that's fine.
