Sure. Its n polarizer or isolator. They are optical diodes (isolators) that transmit in one direction and block reflected beams in the other. They are variable attenuators that transmit the maximum at one angle and when rotated 90 degrees, transmit the minimum. They act like 1/2 waveplates in most circumstances.

I really have no idea. But a google image search came up with a similar looking object with that description. Even had the indention around it. I doubt that is what that is.
