Went to an old friend's house for dinner tonight (fishfry). His ex brother in law and wife were visiting from Denmark who I hadn't seen in 40 years.
A great visit and a fun evening. Anyway my old friend breaks out some picture albums from the early 70's when we were in high school and this picture was in there.
It's his ex father in law with a buck he shot in the middle 70's in Northern California during rifle season with a 30-30. The arrow entered the bucks head in the sinus cavity, through the head and out the other side. When deer was caped for the taxidermy the wound channel was completely healed and the arrow could slid back & forth with ease. The deer head hung in the local hardware store for years and was quite a conversion piece.
I'll bet the guy who shot it with a bow though he was punching his deer tag with that shot.

Such resilient animals. Their will and drive to live is almost beyond comprehension.

It looks like a long arrow. I’m surprised it didn’t break off.

Too cool . It would have been interesting to watch the argument if the game warden had showed up 🤣

On my first trip to Colorado, deer hunting, I had a group of does go by me. One was limping a little and when she got close, I could see the nock of an arrow just in front of her shoulder. The arrow appeared to be completely inside her, length wise. She seemed healthy otherwise, tough animals.

Pretty crazy!!

Dad shot one similar to that in 2004. The arrow entered just behind the front shoulder and came out the neck without ever entering the chest cavity. The land owner at the time was good friends with the local Game Warden so he came out and took some pics and said he would check with the other hunters in the area to find out who lost a deer. To make a long story short he never located the bow hunter and said none of the landowners in the area were allowing bow hunting anyway.
