We are lucky to have a 10% fawn crop. The month of December, we shot 6 coyotes, and last night I get this picture. What do you do to control these fierce predators? ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2023/12/full-57878-409505-img_0607.png)

Snares.
We try to check the fence every day.
Especially this time of the year. We'll get after them with a helicopter in spring for the ones we missed.

Vary your trapping methods, Leg hold or jaw traps, snare, Conibear, Tsc has a big live catch trap with a separate cage for a live chicken. Red spotlight varmint rifle and a mouth or recorded wounded rabbit call. My place has goat wire fencing, so i have had the best luck putting snares or conibear traps where they dig under the fence, They get smart fast

Find trails and set snares.
Keep a rifle beside me at all times and shoot all I see.

I tried some snares about 3 years ago and snared more deer and coons than I did coyotes. Didn’t mind catching the coons , but counterproductive catching the deer.

The Snare Shop.com makes snares with "deer stops". You set them so they will get down to the diameter of the neck of a coyote, but not the diameter of the leg of a deer.

If you're doing it, not leaving hog carcasses on your place will reduce the coyote numbers. Foothold traps and conibear 330's are what I use to trap them.

I’ve posted this before. I don’t shoot coyotes. Why?
About 5 years ago I was hunting by a feeder and pigs showed up. As I was about to stand up to run them off, a coyote ran in and grabbed a piglet and left in a hurry. They all went nuts and ran off squealing. I decided that the song dogs were on my side and I have a lot more pigs than deer for them to feed on.
I know they are a predator and will eat anything they can catch and will take fawns.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

I know they are a predator and will eat anything they can catch and will take fawns. I don't doubt it. I also watched a friend lose lots of registered calves to coyotes. And if memory serves, U.S. Fish and Gane study said 80% of whitetail fawn mortality rate was due to coyote predation. Around me, I've got neighbors raising cattle, and deer I see on a weekly basis. I shoot every coyote I see.

Coyotes are the number 1 deer predator. They kill a lot more deer than hunters do around here. I watch them chase them all over my ranch.

In the areas of the state with too many deer the coyotes are doing us a favor. They get a pass where I hunt.

I don’t have too many deer but way too many pigs.
I’m about to reset my hog trap.

Back in the 80's we were overrun with coyotes to the point that calling & shooting didn't make a dent in their population. So, I got licensed to use cyanide guns. That made a hell of a dent in the coyotes we saw. I still have the guns but quit using them a long time ago. The worse thing about them was after they were set, you had to paint the attractant on them. All I used was for canines and brother did that stuff stink. About 25 - 30 feet was as far as one would get after setting one off.

You ever notice how much a coyote looks like a cockroach? Looking down at a coyote’s back looks just like a damn roach.

Coyotes have been active around us recently. In 12 years we probably snared 6 coyotes, this year has been about 12. We will win, but it is work.

When you're in central TX and surrounded by 4k acres of unhunted land, I rather like the fact that there's a deer per 10 acres and not a deer per 5. Coyotes taking out fawns certainly helps with the numbers game.

Anyone that hunts with me knows if you have a shot at a coyote you better take it.

Anyone that hunts with me knows if you have a shot at a coyote you better take it. Shooting the occasional coyote does nothing to control coyote numbers. Actually, it does the opposite. And, it tends to screw up deer hunts.

The Snare Shop.com makes snares with "deer stops". You set them so they will get down to the diameter of the neck of a coyote, but not the diameter of the leg of a deer. These work as stated. I ran a camera on a fence line where I saw obvious signs of crossing. Ran the camera for 2 months and then set one of these deer proof snares. In the 2 months of photos, I had every animal you could imagine using that crossing, all the deer jumped over the fence. 3 days after setting the snare, I had a doe go under the fence and died. ![bang bang](/forum/images/graemlins/default/bang.gif)

And, it tends to screw up deer hunts. I see you are one of those who bought that old, debunked, liberal lie, spread by the coyote huggers that shooting a coyote increases their numbers... LOL. At what point when you take something out of the equation, do numbers increase? Numbers don't increase when you shoot a coyote, or anything else for that matter... The number is instantly decreased by one. Enough "ones", and you have significant decrease. People will believe anything... ![nidea nidea](/forum/images/graemlins/default/noidea.gif)
