Went to work yesterday evening and threw my compound in the truck. Was going to be very close to a property I have access too and was hoping I would get a chance to break away for an evening sit. Well, God was good and everything aligned to where I was finished up around 3:30, so I quickly got my stuff together and made a dash to the blind. This ranch has some bow set ups ( and I use the term set up extremely loosely) that will allow for compound shots but is not conducive to trad gear. That said, even with a compound the shot scenarios are not ideal but I was gonna make the best of it. Parked, walked to the blind and got set up. This was the only stand which allowed for a south wind so my choice was limited but there was an extreme amount of buck sign in the area, there was about a dozen scrapes in a 300 yard radius. Got in the blind at 4:00, 4:20 I hear a doe blow a few times, 4:30 I have a spike walk up to the feeder. He moseys around a bit and then walks off. A few min later I see a buck off to my left and when I put my rangefinder on him I confirm he is a definite shooter. He works a scrap and doesn’t move from his spot for about 10 min. Eventually he walks over to the feeder and starts to eat. He gets to 30 yards, which is farther than I want to shoot a whitetail but worried he would either catch a doe and run her or a hog would come in and run him off, I drew back, settled the pin and hit the release. The shot was a little higher and farther back than I wanted, but after the arrow blew thru him, he jumped, hit the ground and made 75 yard dash when he stopped, fell over and started to kick. Gave him a few min, said a few prayers of thanks and walked over to him. As I was taking pics I looked behind me and saw a boar hog next to the feeder, so no doubt I made the right call by taking the shot.

Congrats, nice buck. I hate 30 yard shots. They always start ducking at that range.

Congrats, nice buck. I hate 30 yard shots. They always start ducking at that range. This one started to I think. That’s where a fast bow comes into play. My max under usual circumstances is 25 with a 17-18 yard shot preferred. I’ve found at 20 yards they cannot out of the way fast enough at 280fps + I’m glad I saw him drop at he didn’t bleed a drop until he fell over, the hide was catching it all.

I've had a few, especially with fixed heads, that didn't leave a drop. Tracked their foot steps.

Shot two bucks, identical shots right in the pocket and both bled very little. From the few I’ve shot there the “V” tends to produce good blood. Traditional behind the shoulder shots can leave good blood or not a lot. I’ll say that so far, the deer I’ve double lunged have not gone very far.

Congrats! I've shot my fair share with a bow, fixed and expandable, all over the 'kill zone', and to this day, I still can't figure out why some leave a open drain plug trail, while others seem to hold it all in. Glad you found him, good shot, nice animal.

Congrats on a fine buck. Blood trails are a mystery. Fortunately, you made a good shot even if he did duck a little. I always feel better when an animal falls down within sight.
No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.
