Yesterday evening my oldest girl shot her second deer. I joked with her last season that I would gut the first one but she had to do the rest she killed! Once I got the deer hung up she told me she really wanted to gut him, so I handed her the knife and coached her through it. She did about 85% of it herself(she didn’t really want to touch his balls so I wasn’t upset about that😂).I was extremely proud of her for not just sitting back and letting do it. She’s turning into such a good little hunter I just hope this is something she stays in love with and we get to do together for a long time! With all that being said she will turn 11 on New Year’s Eve and I’d like to buy her a knife for her birthday. I think she would do better with something with a gut hook. What do yall recommend? Thanks, Brent

Browning offers several 3 blade folders, with one blade being a gut hook. That’s what I’ve used for decades. Look at the Browning Big Game II or the Kodiak.
Not my monkeys, not my circus...

Quite frankly, I don’t blame her about that rear end part. It is very touchy with that pee bag ramming full. I’ve seen (most) guys, old and young, just ream out that rear end, and they puncture the pee bag and it runs all over the hind quarters( and they never know it) or I’ve seen them hap hazard chop with a ax or so called saw, bust it, and think they did well. It’s a booger.

My recommendation would be to teach her the gutless method. So much cleaner than opening them up. If gutting is required, try the butt out tool. Really neat seeing a young girl jump right in and taking care of business.

Getting her a knife is always a good gift. However, the gift of knowledge is even better. Teach her how to quarter that deer and remove the tenders without gutting it. (I guess me and Daniel Boone think alike.)

They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

We normally take 2 a year to my buddy that’s a processor so he just wants them gutted. The next one she will help quarter!
Get her something custom made. Handle made out of a piece of wood near the deer stand?
But for actually cleaning deer get a box cutter and never look back.
I was thinking something custom as well, I almost feel like she needs something small handle small blade…but kinda want a gut hook but don’t have to have one

Chops Knives. I’ve got a couple that I use in regular rotation during hunting season. His folders are very nice but out of my price range for a working knife.
Lately though, I’ve been cheating and using an Outdoor Edge with the replaceable blades simply because they are the perfect size from gutting to skinning and quartering.

Personally, I am not a fan of gut hooks. They make the tip weak. I had a Buck with gut hook break the tip off when I was separating the hip joint. Personally, I like a full tang, drop point or clip point knife. Just about any brand, as long as it is good steel will work fine. The older Westerns are great (I have two, my sis has two) I also have a cheap Kershaw that holds a fantastic edge. The Buck was warrantied and replaced, and I still have that one too.
I use a Knives of Alaska Lite Hunter which may be a bit heavy for her. The gut hook works very well and sounds like zipper when deployed. I have skinned/gutted many dozens of animals with it. Has only been sharpened once. https://www.knivesofalaska.com/Store/the-light-hunter/light-hunter---stag
Sharpens easy. Holds an edge. One drop point. One clip point. Top shelf steel from Solingen Germany. Small enough for your girl to wield. What I gave my son in a pearl handle when he was a little younger than your daughter. Can’t go wrong with this one. Include a good whet rock with the knife.
