Rattled up over 40 bucks on Saturday and Tuesday morning before this 5 year old eight point showed up. I shot him at twenty steps with my Ruger made Marlin 336. The 140 grain Hornady bullet entered the left shoulder and exited just behind the right shoulder. The TRHP Buck Lure covered my stink as he was directly downwind. This was not the biggest buck I have ever killed but no doubt one of the most fun hunts and at my age, that's all that really matters.
Adios,
Gary [Linked Image]

Very well done. cheers Gary - 'You got a good video of you rattling? It's time for me to start. And it's been 30 years since I've watched anyone rattling, in-person or on video. I have a Savage 99 in .300 Savage (brass counter) that I need to kill one that way with.

Steve was under the weather so I did not get video of the hunt. After the first hour of the hunt, I was kicking myself as footage of bucks responding like this is very rare. I hunted with Murry Burnham who also loved to rattle and he taught me a few tips that help with the little things and help keep a buck hanging around. Bob Ramsey was also a great friend and know for rattling horns on the YO and other Hill Country ranches.
The coverscent or lure that you use is of paramount importance because all of them are going to end up downwind. My favorite lure is the metatarsal gland off a heavy rutting buck. I cut them off a buck and put them in a plastic bag to keep the scent off of me. When I sit down, I like to place on a limb or some other object to my downwind. Showing a buck your horns gives them a visual attraction.
Adios,
Gary

Great hunt, I have rattled up a few when I was younger. It sure is a rush when they run up on you.

I’ve done it. Sometimes successfully and other times not. I watched some videos and went from there. But, I really don’t claim to be good at it.

Another rattling tip for the day. Wear a solid tan colored vest or jacket. Remember you are the deer if you are the one mimicking the fight. The solid tan just looks more like what the buck is expecting to find. Again, all common sense.
Adios,
Gary

Dang Gary, I would have loved to see this next year on Carnivore. Hope you make more videos of different animals.
