Not hard to figure this one out. He’s spent more of his life in prison than outside. He’s about to time out so someone is getting stuck. Why not get in good with the black gangs as a bonus. La eMe considers going to prison as going home.

It has been my observation the prison gang members who like prison more then the outside are that way because they have some level of power/respect inside and they can also bang dude's without having to admit to being gay.
My friend who has spent a good portion of his life behind bars has a very low view of the gangs. He calls joining them the protection plan. He also refers to them as "politics" and said that they can be very dangerous and most are dumber than dirt.
