One has good potential. The other doesn’t.

Weak attempt at stirring the pot. To the contrary, not every post is made in hopes of getting a slap on the back or to solicit comments for debate. It's why the ability to turn off commenting often found with other online apps helps avoid needless distractions. People can share a comment simply for what it may or may not be worth to those who read it.

If it was easier for me to upload pictures on here....i would show you alot of examples of why i dont shoot spikes.
Having a wild native yearling spike turn into a 196" buck 5 years later is justvone example

Having a wild native yearling spike turn into a 196" buck 5 years later is justvone example MAP is my man. I hate to even comment since this is so controversial and there’s no time for me during season to debate it. But I cant resist, since it’s Dan. ASSUMING they are the same age, the one buck could have easily been born early to a real good momma and the other could have been born late to a weak/young momma. Maybe not always, but they can catch up over the years. Once again, I dont want to start a controversial thread but I would not shoot either one-no way, no how. In an intensively managed situation like STx always refers to, then maybe, but normal people would be much better off letting them both grow up. IMO. Don’t even get me started about why TPWD allows/promotes the killing of spikes. They did that as a bone to throw to everyday hunters so they could get them to buy into ARs. It’s stupid beyond belief and needs to abandoned.

I see 1 spike in those pics, the other is a hat rack buck. Well actually not a spike, it has small points trying to form. Lots of research showing spikes can become better deer with the right feed.

Sorry Dan, They both have potential. The smaller spike could have been born late, and therefore has not developed as quickly. I'll shoot a two year old spike, but I tend to let the young spikes walk.

They get a pass at 1.5 yrs old but I have to say, I havent seen any this year. We had one last year.

Seriously, he mocks folks for using a rest to shoot ? Bring it Dan !! more then once However, I've never been one to be impressed when some parent wants to brag about their six-year-old who killed his/her first deer with a rifle they had to lay on the ledge of a box stand window for them to do it. But then, we do now find ourselves in the era of "everyone gets a trophy" don't we.
https://texashuntingforum.com/forum.../re-opinions-on-223-for-deer#Post8926260[/quote] I just happened across a show on one of the outdoor channels where an able-bodied guy was using a tripod and specialized gun vise to hold and steady his rifle when shooting a deer. Now if you ask me, he might just as well been looking at the screen of his phone and pushing a button to make that shot.
You’re mad because a guy took the a responsible position to be more accurate by using a solid rest there for having a higher probability of a clean kill, thus meaning he held the animal life with a high degree of respect? And you taught Hunter ED..... Your post couldn’t get more idiotic, I hope you didn’t tell your students they also shouldn’t use a solid rest and do everything they can do to have the highest probability of a clean ethical kill https://texashuntingforum.com/forum...closer-than-we-might-believe#Post8247092

Why not just shoot what you want (lawfully) and not worry about it? Maybe a spike would turn into a trophy. Maybe not. Who knows? However, if a nice mature buck is taken, that is one less out there. Most leases will have a balance of deer shot. Not all. The lease I am on has very few deer taken for the number of hunters, and there are an abundance of deer. Hunting is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, and unwind from day to day life. Unless there is a rational management plan being followed, I don't see the value in making an issue of this.

I let all my deer grow to at least four years old. My results show just how right this is. I don't tell my hunters what to shoot as that is up to them. That works for us.

They do it for numbers, primarily. They know 90% of hunters won’t kill a doe in place of that spike, so they sacrifice some of the bottom-end of the youngest buck class. If you’re on an MLD plan, there is zero reason to shoot a spike, and not much of a reason for anybody else.

Time and time again it’s been shown that yearling spike bucks can result in a deer growing respectable if not trophy class antlers at maturity.
The antiquated Kerr study is the only one to show that spikes produce inferior racks at adulthood and it was heavily weighted. But this coming from an institute that denies CWD is sheep scrapie despite glaring evidence.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Agree. + Range conditions and population has a lot to do with number of spikes. In the 70s and 80s where I hunt now the deer density was a lot lower than now. A year old buck would grow anywhere from spikes to tenpoint small spindly basket racks with spreads generally 7 to 10 inches and average 140lbs live weight. Now almost all that age are spikes that if lucky weight 100lbs. Deer density and land practices have changed a lot fewer crops and a lot more pine trees equals less very good food for the larger population. 3 year old buck I killed last year tipped the scales at 140lbs, He was killed less than 100 yards from where I killed a 129 inch 2.5 year old 8pt in 1987.
