Wife brought this mount home from her family’s old place on the river. It was taken by her Dad on the Kenedy. I’m gonna take it and have it redone. If you look closely there’s a water line from the flood in ‘98.

Remember as a young kid, seeing the big 10' road berms about 100 yards plus from highway blocking views of their senderos on the Kenedy. One of the earlier that I can recall having done that 45+ years ago.

Anybody want to estimate the score? I didn’t take anymore measurements before I dropped it off.

Running with OP's numbers for 2s and 3s, I get 58" vertical, 28" mass, 48" beams, plus 16.25" width = 150.25 gross

Thanks HF67. I called the shop and left a message to score it. I may not get that # for 8-12 months though.

Original taxidermy shop. Will be using the original board with a new neck mount cape.

Why?! Why are you having it redone? It’s perfect the way it is! Please, don’t do that!

No. You even mentioned the water line. That’s history. The mount itself is history. It’s all historic. Why mess with that? I don’t understand. You have a precious and priceless item that you’re about to turn into a commodity. Why?

You have strong point Sneaky. I’m gonna sleep on my decision tonight. Maybe I can get the taxi to do some repairs instead of new cape.

I concur with Sneaky, that mount has character and a story, clean it up and keep as much original as you can.

Not by my archaic standards, at least. My standards aren’t the best, but they’re way better than most. Dadgum, even your handle suggests an appreciation for what was. Why would anyone want to change what was into what is, right now? Please, let’s not progress. It’s not okay.

Do what makes you happy and keeps the memory strong and positive. If it bothers you or negatively impacts the memory of your father in law/the hunt to look at the stain or other characters of age then get them fixed.

Well I never met my FIL, he died in ‘61 when my wife was 5 yo. He was a WW2 vet in the SPacific. And I didn’t know until today the deer was taken on Pearl Harbor Day. I’ll think out this some more. Thanks for the comments.

My dad killed a nice 10pt back in 1967. He didn't have a lot of money and had a taxi that did a bad job. So he kept it in a shed away from the house. In about 1992 I snuck it out of the shed and had it redone with a new cape. He was real happy with it and moved it back in the house....house burned down 6 months later. I wished I'd never done it. All the pictures of it burned too.
It turned out to be the biggest buck he ever killed.

Fwiw, I’ve got a neck mount that was my grandfather’s from before my time. Mid-70s vintage. It’s just a small 7, but one of only a few other things of his that are now mine. I have no intention of re-caping it.
This is in contrast to one my dad shot; a nice 8 in 1996 in Sutton Co. It was his first deer to mount and our best from that ranch. The taxidermist was crappy and it looks like hell. As soon as that mount gets handed to me, I’m re-caping those antlers.
I say keep it as is, also. it’ll stand out when it’s on a wall in close proximity to more modern mounts. Someone at some point will want to know the story behind it.

This was the house I grew up in as a boy. Deer horns went all the way around the living room, another huge pile in the garage that was way bigger than me, and the ones that Dad cut up for knife handles. The only deer he ever had mounted was what he said might have been the heaviest deer killed in the State of Texas that year, scaled 225 lbs field dressed in the early 80's. Deer lived in soy bean fields and got fat as hell. I was with him and looked at his face when he squeezed that trigger. 250 yrds in the neck with a 25-06, will never forget stepping off the distance and trying to drag that pig of a deer out of the thick brush & into the road. Dad on the floor. Uncle in the Blue suit, man could play a huge number of instruments well. My little brother has kept this shoulder mount for decades but got tired of hauling it around. Asked me if I wanted it. No brainer. It doesn't look good anymore at all, but I'll take it.
