…way back in the middle of the mountains of Colorado. Who would do such a thing?

They actually make better house pets than you would think. My wife and kids roped me into it, but they're not so bad. They're like cats without the attitude. I couldn't imagine someone just turning them loose to try and survive in the wild. Domesticated rabbits aren't equipped for that.

Part of me says rice & gravy,
the other part of me says no. Funny that you mention that. Ever since we got pet bunnies, the girls don't want me to hunt the wild ones. Shame too. They're more tender than squirrel.

I’m surprised it’s lasted more than a night. Me too. My BIL had raised a couple of big, white, domestic rabbits and then decided not to keep them. Said he couldn't bring himself to kill them so he turned them out on the premise they would "Have a chance". Yeah right. A chance to run terrified as something either swooped down on it or tore it limb from limb.....probably starting to eat it before fully dead. Sheesh....a BIG, WHITE, DOMESTIC rabbit is going to stand out like a Diamond in a Goats A$$ in that environment. It won't take predators long to take advantage of that.
Spartans ask not...how many, but where!

When we lived in Clarksville, TN, our neighborhood backed up to some woods. One morning I go out to head for work and I see five or six of these domesticated white rabbits that got loose or were cut loose out in the grass near my truck. Stood out like crazy, obviously. When they would see me, they would flatten their ears and lay low as if they were hiding and I couldn't see them. It was actually pretty comical. Needless to say, there seemed to be one fewer each morning I went to work until there were nada. What makes it worse for them not blending in is their thinking they actually do blend in.

Snow Shoe Hare is right. Hunt them in the snow and follow their tracks, that will keep you busy going round and round in circles, ask me how I know.

When I was a kiddo in Oak Cliff someone had let around 15-20 pet rabbits go right after Easter into lower Kiest park. Guessing vehicles, hawks and dogs having fun got them.

Yep, snow shoe hares turn white in winter. They are harder to spot when we actually have snow on the ground. They also do not taste the best but are edible.

My oldest son lived in Maryland for a bit. There is a neighborhood there that a man raised rabbits for food and market. He decided to turn them loose and get out of the business. They are thriving there and as fast as wild ones, and have even cross bred to the wild ones. The folks there just accept them as part of the wildlife around the place. Hawks, foxes, dog's, car's get their share, but hasn't slowed them down, and they have been on the loose for a long while now.

Yeah, it’s a snowshoe. I had never seen any up there, and we saw three of them on this trip. They sure do stick out without any snow to blend in with.
