The 300 Ham'r vs 350 legend thread got me thinking, and I didn't want to hijack the thread. Why would someone want to build a bolt action rifle around a round that was designed for the AR? Why a 300hamr or 300blk bolt rifle when you can have a 308? Why a 6.5 grendel when you can have a 6.5 Creedmoor? I could see why someone would want a 350 legend bolt IF they were hunting in one of the states that limit you to straight walled cartridges, but other than that, I don't get it.

I want a suppressed bolt action 300blk only because it's quieter than my suppressed AR 300blk. No interest in a 308.

I have bolt 300BO rifles so I don't have to worry about it choking and puking while using a silencer. I don't need a 308 for the range I hunt on my ranch. The list goes on and on. Queue the person who will say their AR has never malfunctioned roflmao

I got a couple of cases of it a year or so ago. I think you might have posted the link to the sale.

Might have. I'm down to about a case myself but I'm not shooting pigs lately like I used to. I love hearing that impact sound. clap

I have a 300 Hamr bolt gun I’ve been working on. Couple reasons for me, I hunt populated areas…a slow bullet with adequate knock down power is better than fast because it’s not going to get away from me and I’ve seen enough 300bo to know I wanted more.

Recoil is very controlled and I can get back on target sooner. Plus, the Hamr is just cool and fun to shoot.

bullet seating depth huh?
barrel length can't you just cut down a sort action barrel just the same? Unless you're going really short
velocity and pressure just do a reduced load
Sub sonic cycling I'm specifically referring to bolt guns

I have a .300 Ham’r AR and a .300 Ham’r bolt gun. The biggest reason is because I wanted to. I don’t feel any other justification is necessary. Heck, the vast majority of my firearm purchases have very little to do with whether it does a job better than another or fills some perceived “need”. It’s just because I like cool guns and wanted it. I’ll have my suppressed Ham’r bolt gun in a tree stand tomorrow morning instead of one of my other rifles just because I want to shoot a deer with it. Have plenty of others in the safe that might be a “better” choice.

Throw 223 out why would anyone want a bolt action one? Why not a 22-250? Why a 308 and not a 30-06 or 300 win mag?

For me? Recoil for young shooters. Cheap components and more practice. My ar blackout is neat but I do find myself wishing it was a bolt gun with an adjustable stock.

Pretty simple really. People should get what they want. No justification needed or required.

I lean toward unclebubba’s logic, though I do have a 6.5 Grendel AR. For deer I use a 260 bolt gun, feeling that I have more precision at longer distances with it. For hogs, normally at shorter ranges, I use the Grendel. But, that’s just me and what I’m comfortable with.

Not arguing this logic. If the reason is "because I want it", nothing wrong with that. I guess I'm just not seeing a good reason other than that. In an AR, I get it. Suppressed ar, 300 blk, subs and supers function without any adjustments and it's handy and fun. Switch over to a bolt gun, and I have a hard time seeing the benefit of reduced case capacity.

When I built out the Grendel boltaction I was told you need more speed get a Creedmoor I replied something like if I want more speed in a 6.5 I would just pull out the 6.5-284 or 264 Win Mag. Simple reason I had been hunting with an AR n 6.5 Grendel and liked the round and what I saw it doing to critters from close to a bit over 400 yards. I just prefer to hunt with a boltaction.

Basically, I did that rifle because I wanted too. Since I did that Howa, CZ and Ruger brought out rifles in that caliber and others,

I have an AR and boltaction in grendel, the AR rarely ever gets shot these days.

most 22-250’s have a factory 1-10 twist, cant shoot sized bullets. Why the 22 creedmoor is becoming so popular so quick

but yea im on the less recoil the better side

I was comparing AR’s to a Bolt platforms. Not a specific cartridges

I have bolt guns in all my AR rounds, 223, 300BO, 6.5 Grendel, 308. Last couple years my go to gun has been a 6.5 Grendel in a Ruger Predator bolt gun.
Crazy accurate, low recoil and just gets the job done.

I could probably be happy with a bolt gun in 6.5 Grendel, if I didn’t already have a 260. What I do like about the Grendel AR is that I don’t lose the sight picture when I crank off a round at a hog. But I can also hold the sight picture with the 260, or maybe I’m holding it well enough that the reticle bounces right back to where it was. I like that neither one kicks very much.

Everyone overlooks that one and never argue about the need for a bolt action 223.

I have a 223 and 6.8 SPC 2 in bolt actions. They are fun to shoot.
