I posted about the big 7 point I had several chances to shoot during bow season but wanted my son to get since he doesn`t have a lot of time to devote to hunting. The buck was with a doe 10 days ago for an hour and 18-20 yards from my stand and left just before dark. He disappeared totally off radar and we hadn`t seen him at all since that day and I`ve hunted every day but one since rifle season started. I really thought one of the hunters around us shot him opening weekend because no one around us was going to pass on a mature deer like him. So.... My son took off work early yesterday since he had to weigh and validate my granddaughters show pigs this morning and couldn`t go today. I was already there and hunting / rattling across the road on a small tract of land that backs up to a big ranch. 19 minutes from the time I got a text from him, saying that I`m at the gate and headed to your blind (it`s the best spot) I heard a shot and it kind of scared me since I knew he should just be climbing into my blind and that's when accidents can happen with firearms. I texted WTF to him and waited for a reply. He finally texted back that the BIG 7 had just ran across the mesquites as he was literally opening the windows and he shot at him rifle when he finally stopped @ 135 yards, but he thinks he missed as the buck turns and runs towards the creek and out of site bang bang bang. Now, I not happy after passing the most mature deer (6.5 year old) 4 times with my bow so he could have an opportunity to shoot him, and he rushes the shot and thinks he missed. He sits there for about 5 minutes before he finally gets down and goes to look for the buck. No blood anywhere at the location he was standing, so he heads in the direction he ran with little hope. After walking about 40 yards thru the mesquites and tall grass he spots something white..........A deer's belly. I finally get a text from him that says, "I got him" banana. He made a perfect shot behind the shoulder and now we`re both happy. I`ve had a lot of history with this buck going back to the 2020 deer season. He has been an 8 point every year but this year. Last year he had a broke G2 on his left beam and this year the G3 on that beam went away. That has to be his shortest hunt ever.

This is a picture of him (under feeder) at the end of the 2020 season when he was 3.5 year old and an 8 point. The deer with him was a 10 point last year and I had picture of him until he lost his horns in late February of this year. I was and hopefully the neighbors would give him one more year but it just wasn`t in the cards. Have not seen him at all this year though. I had a picture of a buck with no horns in late March that had a broken leg and I`m pretty sure now that it had to be him since both of those deer were attached at the hip every year except during the rut. I was very disappointed when the 10 point never showed this year and I had to accept that he was probably the deer with the broken leg and mother nature took its course. God's creatures have a tough life.

I`m at that point myself. Last year I was hunting midweek and had one of our better mature bucks chasing a doe about 10 a.m. but I couldn`t get a shot and finally went home at 11 o'clock. I called him and told him that if he could get off early from work, I wouldn't go that afternoon and he could use my blind and he would have a good chance to get him. He took off early and ended up shooting the buck at 4:30 and was in my drive before dark with a big smile and a story. This makes 2 years in a row that I`ve took one for the team, but that's ok. I still remember him getting his first buck and I still get that feeling when he gets one. I`m actually more excited when he gets one than I do.
