One of my best opening day for deer here in Texas. And on my own land. I've been seeing a big buck on my cameras for about two weeks. He was there just at dark last night. So I made plans with two great friends James and Austin to go out early today at 3am since it was opening day gun season for deer. There were 5 does there when we arrived. And they left as soon as they saw our headlights. We got situated in my fancy hunting blind and made coffee so we could stay sharp until sunrise. It was quite at sunrise but beautiful skies. Austin spotted a coyote heading back towards where my feeder was and the deer typically come out. It was about 7:45am. He asked to borrow James's rifle and dropped it at 150 yards. Then at about 8am I saw a buck then two then 4. Austin said "it's the big one" and I began to get the adrenaline pumping. I shot and missed but James shot at an 8 pointer and we heard the hit. Mind you we were shooting at 214 yards with suppressed rifles. So the deer had no clue what was happening. The big one had run into the field and was now at 180 yards. This time I hit him and he dropped right there. Then James saw a rag horn spike. I gave him the thumbs up and he dropped that one in it tracks. Those were the first bucks James ever shot. great buck and sharing it with others a very memorable time. 3 bucks and a coyote from one stand opening morning now that is an experience.
