I was down in April when my area of the lease got sold. I was back up after moving across the hiway and finally got everything set back up. Now I'm down again after finding out my LO died 2 weeks ago. Wife is taking it real hard. Hopefully, I (we) can get back up this weekend.

I was giddy. I mean giddy like a school girl getting flowers from her crush the night before bow opener. The heat tempered that excitement quite a bit. This cold front has me excited again.

For me, hunting is a lifestyle, not something I just can take or leave.

I’m not saying it get the same level of excitement I did when I was 12 the night before opening day, but I still get antsy when season is open and I haven’t gotten out there.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I’m fairly excited. I want a chance at that old weird horn buck. Not quite so excited about taking a doe for the freezer. The cold weather has got me sort of in the mood though.

price in the long run is not a factor - memories is what is important - go make the best of it - just like life there are good times and bad times but for me I want to experience them all

I'm a little frustrated right now. So is my daughter.

For the past three years I've been trying to get my kid onto a nicer buck. Not necessarily a truly mature buck, but something she'd be proud to call her first 8pt, or certainly a mature buck if one happened by. We both look forward to youth weekend because it seems I always have two or three of the quality we're looking to get her running around my area all summer and throughout bow season, until the week of youth weekend when the rut turns on. I took my "mature" buck the 2nd weekend of bow, and have been kicked back letting the woods rest since then, letting the deer get all comfy again. Had pics on both of my cams of three bucks on her hit list regularly up until last sat/sun when they all got real random and were nocturnal by thursday night. We saw a fraction of deer this past weekend that were regularly showing up less than a week ago. happens every year. By this coming weekend I expect the rut to be in full swing, and then anything can happen. It just seems that youth weekend is a weird time when they are transitioning at our place and makes it a tough hunt.

Her extracurriculars at school keep her swamped and it gets more difficult for her to go as the season wears on, especially the next few weeks when she really needs to be in the stand.

As it is, I really have no deer hunting to do until she kills something or we decide that I'll kill an "under" late season just to put some more meat in the freezer. Basically, she hunts off my allotment which is 1 mature buck and one under/spike. But since we hadn't killed a mature buck in 3yrs and have a surplus of 3-4yr old bucks running around it is agreed by all that we'd bend our rules a little this year if the opportunity arose. I'm still gonna hunt this weekend but seriously doubt I'll kill anything at all. Hell, I'll probably sleep thru the morning hunts, lol. And then I'll probably have one or more of the bucks we'd want for her walk out and stand broad-side at 50yds when she can't be there. That happens pretty regularly as well.

But on the other hand, I'm planning a few projects out for the next couple of weekends, so at least I might actually get something done this november instead of hunting every weekend.

Yes, I am excited about putting some meat in freezer. Almost all of the meat from last year is gone.

I’m pumped this year, even though I likely don’t have a trophy on the place.

Can't say that I'd call it "excitement" per se.

Semantics aside, however, I'm ALWAYS stoked for this time of year. With the punishment of summer behind us, the land and the wildlife "soft boots" itself as it prepares to take another crack at things in the spring. I always say that I might take a buck if one appeals to me...but it's been better than ten years since that happened. Oh, I'm afield more days per season these days than ever before but I'm more interested in helping inexperienced family and friends discover the clean smell of a frigid morning at daylight or the pheromone stink of a buck in the thick brush. To watch them control their excitement long enough to both get a shot off the way I taught them and to have it strike home where I'd shown them. To show them how to convert that hot carcass into prime table fare with their own hands and to know the independence that comes with that knowledge.

Now that I think about it some, I AM excited!

Hope y'all are too...whatever is driving you.

Yeah, Dad and I went out this past week to setup his blind, and clean up the trailer. I do enjoy the long ride with my dad, the bickering back and forth about politics. I know we probably don't have many more seasons together, so whenever he calls I go. I'll probably any get out two or three times this year. If I get a doe I'll call it a season.

Glad to see that yall are still motivated.

I'm at the age where I feel the number of deer seasons I have left means taking advantage of every one for as long as I'm physically possible. The feeling was highlighted just today when I saw the x-ray an old high school friend sent me of his ankle that he broke this past weekend. He said his season is now over before it began and will be replaced with surgery, a metal plate, screws, and rehab.

Just because you're half brain-dead doesn't mean everyone else is. Get past your stupid self and spend time with dad. It's limited, you know? What a freaking clown.

Still soaring myself; but disappointed at the Doe count around me at this present time.
Stay alert & focused when you go. Imagine how’d you feel if you lost concentration at that moment of opportunity; and that big one slipped by you just in time for you to watch him go.
Enjoy the moment; especially when they are far and few between!

If you’re not excited, maybe it’s time to mix it up. You could try a different style of hunting, different species, or change up the layout to your hunting property. For me to stay excited, I always have a personal goal of some kind that I’m working toward.

I’m not feeling it this year, between working 80 plus hours a week and not having any free time I’ll be surprised if I get to hunt much outside of a few guided hunts I’m taking the boss on. We had some really big deer get passed last season so I guess they’ll keep getting older unless I get a little free time to go around thanksgiving.

Can't wait for opening weekend, the 3rd one in November. Will miss the first weekend in December due to yet another destination wedding in Cabo, but that will be that. The new suppressor is attached to the 270 and cannot wait to use it. The 45 70 might get a lil' brush use also. Can't wait to spot and stalk some piggies. Only get to take four deer this year and hoping like all get out one of the other hunters gives me some of their MLD tags for at least one extra. Fingers crossed there. Might only get four deer, but the quail population almost looks absurd. If they hold out, may have to concentrate on those tasty lil' feathered creatures a lil' bit.

Had a 24 hour window and went down with 64 bags Friday. Stacked 'em up in the conex. Glad I went down as there was a major leak in the flex hose servicing my bathroom. Absoltuely horrible to turn on your water feed and hear that sound. TG it was all underneath and accessible. Went to bed dirty as all get out Friday night. Got to Ace Hardware in Cotulla at 9AM the next morning. Shark bites make it so simple - pretty much idjit proof. Cleaned up the cabin, changed the sheets, left the trailer at camp and headed back to the fish fry at the Ohl Ranch that evening. Yes, stocked up and ready to go.

A lot of guys, who are getting older, lose “it”. Statistically, many studies have shown this happens around 60 years old. It can happen to many “flame hunters” earlier. Age does so funny things to the mind. I still get excited.
