........unless you remember road trips with Dad, Mom, your siblings and stopping at those roadside cement picnic tables for lunch. Mom made the very best fresh grated pimento cheese sandwiches, cut on an angle. Salted fresh tomatoes and ice-cold whole milk out of the Igloo jug!!

Last time we did that my son was 6 months old in ‘91. Stopped at one close to Texas/NM border couple years ago to air out dogs. The place was pitiful, used drug syringes and parafinalia all over the ground, some homeless guy had a camp setup on one end of the picnic area. We didn’t stay any longer than necessary.

Today is my Mom's birthday. She would have been 105 years old. Pretty sorry how the world has turned out between then and now!!

That, plus a jar of pickled okra in the picnic basket!

Yeah, I used to knock-out a tub of that stuff all by myself dipping into it with a box of Ritz crackers . . . grin

It's gotten so dang expensive these days . . . mad

I hadn't heard of pimento-cheese sammich filling. Looks simple -- and wonderful. I just baked a loaf of buttermilk bread yesterday that should be about perfect ...

I am most definitely southern but pimento cheese and iced tea both make me vomit.

I do remember the trips exactly like you describe ... and avoiding that mush.

Pass the gravy.

Must have been a youth thing. When your Dad said choices were "Take it, or leave it", it made a pretty decent lunch. smile

Love it occasionally, especially the brand that has jalapenos added.

Had few road side meals with my kids. I wonder how they remember those trips with us.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

Go to Prines BBQ in Wichita Falls, get some of their homemade pimento cheese. (A lot of people don’t like pimento cheese) and you will love it. Spread it on a sandwich or Fritos. And while you’re at it, get that ham sandwich for $7.00. Real meat; not pressed game and slow cooked on a real brick cooker.

The state has ripped out a lot of them but there is still some nice picnic areas around and I'll stop and eat on side of the road. Have done so with the kids more than a few times. A couple of my favorites are the picnic are on US67 south of Glen Rose and the one off US281 about 10 minutes north of Jacksboro. The new safety rest areas are cleaner and nicer than the old ones for sure.

Pimento cheese is ok but I'm more of a sardines and crackers or baloney and cheese guy when travelling.

Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

That's how we traveled back in the 70's. Speed limit 55mph, grandpa driving to wherever we were going with a beer between his legs (drinking and driving was still legal). Stopped at rest areas and broke out the cooler for lunches and snacks. And invariably, at least once per trip we'd make wrong turn and end up on "the wrong side of the tracks" as our grand parents would say. The good ol' days.

The new Texas roadstop is Buc-ee's. I cannot stop there anymore either.

Southern is coming home and your hot bride hanidng you some hot cornbread and cold milk. Yes, I won the lottery with mine. Going to ask her to fix me a pimento cheese sandwich later today.

Is Buc-ee's worse than Alsup's? Haven't had the pleasure.
Did pick up some diced pimentos and extra-sharp cheddar yesterday ... cheers

Lots of memories as a kid having lunch during road trips on the side of the road, Mom always made pimento cheese and potted meat sammiches for us.

I don't care for most store bought pimento cheese so I make my own when I do eat it. Last one I made was a bacon/jalapeno pimento cheese recipe I found on-line somewhere and man, it was good.

Like mentioned above, great on Ritz crackers, as just a snack too. Gotta use the block cheese for best flavor and texture. The cellulose coating they put on modern grated cheese anymore just doesn't make it the same as Mom used to!!

I made a batch last night and schmeered up a sammich on the home-made buttermilk bread. That's a keeper, right there, that cheese and pimiento spread with a little diced "hellapeenie" in the mix.
Thanks Blank! cheers
