Ever hear of a man named Jim Fueling? I worked with him until his death in late 2002 and the OEs are just starting to catch up to what he knew and taught me nearly 25 years ago. It's Jim Feuling, not Fueling. I use talk text. Whatever it hears is what is getting sent. I wear a three X glove and typing on a phone is a virtual impossibility for me.

^^^ What are you blathering on about? Have you been drinking? I have a Superflo engine dyno not a chassis dyno. It shows the torque the engine is producing and is pretty accurate. I tuned for a living and was well know in the Dallas area. Have you ever owned a 1995 FLM anything? I did the cold start calibration on every single model for nearly 9 months straight in the middle of Canada. I got out of the business because I found something that pays much better and that was more than 20 years ago. There are no customers that I have to show numbers to on the dyno. Guy I work with BIL waited over a year for his dream F250. Finally came in last week. Him and his wife drove it home. Put it in park and got out. The truck rolled backwards and crashed into their house as they were walking in the front door.

Cam phasers twice and new transmission on my 2019 ford f150. V6 ecoboost.only 85,000 miles. tranny went out at 62,000. I have been driving ford trucks for almost 30 years. Might be my last. Should have stuck to my 2013 f150 with the 5.0 engine. Cam phasers twice and complete new transmission on my wife's 2019 Expedition all done with less than 63k miles. She said she felt the transmission pull again last week. Unbelievable. is that the 10 speed? yes

(Edits) As I start preparing for retirement and finding that Ford 1/2 ton 4wd drive beater pickup that is long-term reliable, wrenchable and capable of driving halfway across the country when needed and locally, I keep looking back to the 4.6L years. I've had two models with the 5.4 2v and 3v and have been very happy with those. My daily driver is a 2011 Expedition with a 5.4 3v...and although I'm helping manage the cam phaser/top end oil starvation issue with very regular synthetic 5W-30 oil changes, I'm (over?) thinking that I would rather have the 4.6L (2005-2007) F150 for that long-term retirement truck.
Do you guys think about this too? Vehicle, engine, electronics, and transmission designs are just too overengineered today. My take is that platform/design reliability hit a peak point about~10-15 years ago... and I'd like to stay in that wheelhouse. Honing in on that wheelhouse is the trick. No infotainment screens for me.
Regardless of the manufacturer, you are on the right track. They are way over-engineered and the infotainment systems will not be repairable in the future.
Pass the gravy.

Agree, GG. Whatever manufacturer you know and trust is key (10 to 20 years ago = the peak combo of reliability technology and longevity). With that said, if I had a retirement truck and was never going to leave town or the immediate area, I would consider mid-80s early 90s pick up all day long (FI, electronic ignition, roller cam). What we drove before those days -- points ignition, carburetion, hydraulic or solid lifters, drum brakes), reliability was always an issuev and you never knew if you were going to arrive at your destination. I think about that a lot how easy we have it.

Maybe, after reading this thread, I should just keep my seemingly bulletproof 2007 Tundra (189k miles). There really is no real need to replace it, at least not yet, other than my desire for a new truck that I don’t need. You guys got me to thinking about all those complicated dashboards on the new trucks. That Mercedes RV Sprinter Van seems to need a software update every other month. That thing is super complicated. Every time I have it in the shop, I ask them to update the highway speed limit indicator, which maxes out at 55 mph. And heck, is there a highway speed limit in Texas as low as 55? So basically, it’s worthless as is. 3 or 4 times I’ve been in there, and that has not been fixed. They tap dance around that, but I think they don’t know how to update it.

603, good thinking. Maybe you could find a backup one of those trucks with even lower miles that you could put away for down the road. Or an alternate route might be sourcing a few components to keep that truck on the road for many years to come. I would expect with very thoughtful fluid changes and maintenance you could get 500k miles or better out of that driveline.

When I hit 200k miles, or when I just decide to do it, I’ll have the 100,000 mile work done again. At 100k, I had them go from the front bumper to the back one. I gave them free reign to find and fix everything they could find that needed fixing - belts, hoses, all fluids and filters, new struts and shocks, filters, brake pad replacements, and such as that. Whatever it costs.

Unless it is at or below freezing (and slush or snow present), the parking brake is always used for this very reason. It was a requirement at work for the very reason you posted, Ford trucks.
