Hung a stand on my new lease and it’s about 750 yards away from where I can park my truck. I don’t own an ATV or anything and can’t drive much closer. Thinking if I shoot a heavy deer I might have to pack it out or buy a sled, or something.

What’s the farthest you have had to drag a deer out and did you quarter it where you shot it or keep it intact until you got to the truck?

We routinely have to move them 1/2 mile and on occasion 1 mile to get to the parking area. We use 2 wheel carts and I have used a 4 wheel garden cart. We are not allowed to use gas powered motorized vehicles in the area where we hunt. Thinking about getting an electric bicycle with a tow behind cart.

Once and only once about a 1/4 mile over rocky uphill terrain using a rope tied around his neck. I was much younger and less fat then.

Why don’t people cut the deer in half and carry it out in two trips?

Dragging a deer more than hundred or so yards is for the birds

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

If you're in Texas, on a couple thousand acres, get a two wheeled cart and make it easy on yourself. If you are in the mountains out West on public land, then learn to process the deer on the spot. You can drag that deer out whole, with a messed up cape, if you want to. I will take the time to cape it out properly, cut off the antlers and skull plate, then bone it out and load the meat in my large back pack. I'll be sitting on the tailgate, drinking a beer when you get there!!!! smile

Beer and whiskey, 'cause you can't drink bacon!!

I’ve drug wounded deer a few hundred yards, but I prefer them to fall within 20 yards of truck access.

3.5 miles, 1/4’d in a back pack. Way easier than a cart. I’ve done 3 this way on my public land river hunts, decent bucks. One was 130”. Get the weight close to your own core and it’s not that difficult with a good pack. Load up the pack, lay it flat on the ground, lay on your back with the pack under you. Strap it on, roll over onto your stomach, get on all fours and get on your feet. Or, take a friend with you and share the load.

About 2 miles when I was much younger. Carried the 10 point head with cape attached around my neck and two quadrupled 55 gallon black trash bags full of quarters and neck meat rib meat etc. I had to stop and smoke a cigarette every 30 minutes and rest. 3 hours later I was never so glad to see that raggedy POS truck as I was that day. Quit smoking 21 years ago.

My FIL and I poled one out for over a mile, field dressed, when I was a much younger man. Too many options available today to worry about that again.

Had a spot we walked in to hunt. Was a creek at the back of the place we always hunted on the other side. Was able to get the deer over my shoulders, and carried out whole. Climbing up the short but muddy creek bank was a challenge, probably 6-700 yards.

Old lease we were on used a 2 wheel cart to get them anytime it rained or wanted to keep the pasture quiet.

About 400 yards in a two wheel cart at Big Bend Ranch State Park. They want their deer brought back gutted but not quartered. That's what kept me from hunting too far off the road. Plus I was solo.

Different game in my part of the world. Actually a whole lot easier most times and one of the reasons hunting in the snow is good. Just flip them into a toboggan and stupid easy to drag them for miles if need be.

About 3/4 mile by myself. Helped a fellow hunter get one out about a 1.5 miles get his kids small buck out on public land. Was much younger and in lots better shape in the early 80s.

ugh, drug them way too far. But I still vividly recall a big 3x5 MD I shot in NM east of Chama, way up high and a long way from the nearest road, boot deep snow but fortunately 98% all down hill. well over a mile that I did by myself until the last 100 yards which was uphill to the road. Drug it far enough in the snow that it wore thru the hair and skin on the bottom side. Thankfully I was in my 30s and still pretty fit. Took 3 of us to get that last 100 yards.

Blank...if you did that (debone) the deer you would be illegal...you're only allowed to cut the deer down into quarters.

Roughly a mile when I was living in NW Arkansas after college. Had to hike in at least a mile to get away from all the public hunters, but dang, when you're successful, carrying a deer over multiple big hills almost isn't worth it. Terrain is not friendly out there.

I use a pack with load self

Whole- a little less then 2 miles
QTR -less the 6 miles on way, two trips (rear + front + scrap) & (rear + front+ head)
deboned(were legal) - one whole load 11 miles

I’ve spent a lot of years elk and mule deer hunting. They seldom show up in convenient places. I’ve quartered them and made multiple trips in and out. You can’t drag an elk and they are seldom in convenient places.

Now, too old to tackle the real wilderness places and I sold my horses.

Which required some planning for success. These were in and out hunts each day with a camp site that I was driving to. Eat a BIG breakfast, take lunch x's 2 and about 1-1-2 days of water. Planning on 1/4'ing my deer and removing the rack, I carried an Outdoor Edge replaceable blade knife, a T handle game saw, and a hack saw with a Wyoming Saw blade that I cut and fitted so it would work with my hack saw. The Wyoming Saw blade cuts through bone like a laser. A cart is loud, cumbersome, it's with you every step of the way in and out unless you stage it, cart bad, backpack good.

I saw someone make a deer backpack by running the front and back legs together, thought I might try it, looks interesting. I think I will take my wheelbarrow and leave it in the truck while I hunt public tomorrow just in case. Moon is huge and it is hot, but I still need to go!

I regularly have to drag deer a long distance. Sometimes in pretty rough terrain. I did the deer backpack thing once. By the time I got to the truck, my whole backside was completely soaked in blood. It was a good thing that I had a change of clothes in the truck. Now, I use a roll up sled. SOOOO much easier. https://www.amazon.com/DEER-SLEIGHR-Magnum-Game-Sled/dp/B001CJI7XA

Edit, Furthest distance was just a tad over 3/4 of a mile. It was a big buck, and the terrain was brutal. I ended up going and getting my Nephew and BIL to help finish the last 1/4 mile. This was the drag that caused me to buy the sled.
