I just did it. When I point my finger at an object about 4’ away I see two fingers. One appears to be more of an extension of my arm. When I close my right eye there’s not one finger and it’s right on the object. When I close my left eye I am pointing way to the left. Right handed, left eye dominant.

When my son was young he was the same way. Changed him to left handed, problem solved to this day.

Pops found out he was left eye at about 60. He could kill birds right handed pretty well as a kid but it shocked his world. He cannot relearn at this point.

Yup you can check your own that way as well. easy check.

For most of my life I was Left eye dominate now after 5 eye surgeries I am right eye dominate. For most of December 2018 I was legally blind in the left eye (could not see the big E on the top of the eye chart well enough to read it w ith the left eye). After that started recovering following the 5th surgery, it switched to right eye.

I think mine has changed somewhere along the way also, maybe after my Lasik surgeries in 2009. When I do the finger test tonight, I'm right eye dominant now. I'm almost 64.

Used it a lot working in an archery shop. Simple and it works. As many new shooters as I setup in 5 years Used the simplest test i knew of.

Some the dominate eye is so much so the person cannot shut it without closing both eyes. The young man in the OP is an example. In that case try hi shooting left handed. Might even make it something of a game with his Red Rider. After reading in outdoor Life as a kid to be prepared for different hunting/shooting opportunities it pays to be able to shoot from either shoulder. I took that to heart and got to where it doesn't matter which shoulder I shoot from for rifle or shotgun.

Close one eye @ a time.

That's part of his problem. He can't close his left eye by itself. lol. Maybe I should be working on that with him instead of shooting

My youngest boy is 5 and shoots his little red ryder pretty well. Not great, but decent. He's right handed but seems to be left eye dominate. I've put him behind a scoped 22lr a few times and he's a natural at throwing the rifle up to his right shoulder but he leans his face way over and looks through the scope with his left eye. He can't "wink" with his left eye so closing it by itself is part of his problem.

What have yall done for youngsters in this situation? Maybe cover up his left eye with an eye patch? Start him shooting with his left hand?

He's really wanting to start hunting (he's obviously not ready now) and I'm having fun with this left eye / right hand situation.

my 10 year old is same way. I have her shooting left handed, even though she is right handed. Once she is done growing i will build her own LF guns, Until then I got her a Sig cross because LOF adjustability and ambidextrous safety.

I think it counter productive to try to change whats natural

Exactly, Go with what is natural. When the dominate eye is so much so they cannot shut it and putting an eye patch or trying to use glasses to not be able to see the target well with the dominate eye might work for some but then you take away the strongest part of their vision and loose depth perception along with a lot of field of vision. Something no hunter I know wants to do. It can work for just target shooting but a handicap hunting.

I was able to shut my dominate left eye and for several years was able to fit my head on the stock shooting right handed but as I grew that went away. I am very glad I learned to shoot from either side through practice and there are quite a few deer, turkey, doves and other critters that it came in handy harvesting.

For something not too expensive a combo youth single shotgun and rifle are ambidextrous guns and could try dfferent things discussed here. More $ but a Tc contender carbine and 410 barrel would be good and a stock change and more barrels could be a gun for life.

Being a cross dominant shooter myself, I'd ask what you want him to be successful at. Most of the posts in here are about rifles or pistols -- frankly speaking, anyone can shoot both from strong or weak side. That equation changes significantly if you want him to go shoot clays. I'm extremely thankful my dad was aware and raised me to shoot left handed because I was left eye dominant. I still shoot pistols right handed and have developed a compensatory mechanism for aiming correctly. I can shoot rifles left or right, but left feels more natural. Don't ask me to shoot a bird right handed because it just doesn't work for me

Ditto. My dad caught my problem the first time we went to shoot. Now I dont like left handed bolt actions rifles because of my naturally being right handed.

Know left or right eyed helps in all kinds of things.
I broke three fingers on my right hand during basketball season in high school. I had to learn to shoot lefty, and I was better at it. Come to find out I was lining up the ball in front of my left eye with my left hand, amazing the difference when you can see what you re doing.
