What’s your position on employees that don’t tell the truth and do you give them a second chance? I’m trying to decide if I’m asking for to much from people today or if I’m correct that anyone caught blatantly lying to my face being terminated immediately. I know we have more than a few people on here with a lot of employees so I’m needing some opinions on how you handle it.

I’d normally say, rid yourself of him

But at this point, we as a large company have a hard time finding men who want to work and that ain’t no joke.

So, I guess I’d ask…does he make you money?

Because the alternative is highly probable to be less profitable if he does

It used to not be like this

My situation is a bit different than yours, but asking for/demanding honesty is NOT asking for too much. Caught in a lie to your boss, you deserve to be terminated.

Lying to a supervisor was always termination for my department.

Were not a big company but currently have around 40 employees and your not joking about it being hard to find guys willing to work these days and this is the very reason why I was questioning my old school mentality of reasons for termination. It’s almost to the point of pick your poison pill because just a few years ago we weren’t in this situation which really sucks and appears to be getting worse by the day.

It appears most of you think like me and anyone caught lying should be whacked immediately so I’m not going to change my stance on it just yet, I appreciate you guy’s confirming I’m not being a jerk asking for honesty.

You know your employees much better than we do, you will need to make that call.

I always looked at it like if they will lie about one thing and I found out, how many other things have they lied about that I don’t know.

Depends upon the person and the lie. If it was from what you think is a good person and they told a little white lie to cover something personally embarrassing then I would just reprimand them.
If it was from what you deem a sketchy person and the lie was to cover their azz on something they know they did wrong, then punt them!

I deal with lying daily, it is the nature of construction workers. If I canned everyone that worked for me that lied, I would work alone.

Lying can have a snowball effect in business. There's no room for it.

'Can't stand liars. I'm very glad I no longer have to worry about employees. "Monday-itis" drove me nuts. Lightweights.

Some people making lying their go-to at any hint of embarrassment. One brother was this way and he taught his family that it was acceptable. You get to find out the truth years later sometimes.

In my career I was part of the sales team (computer industry) and the best story and only story was the truth. Never have anything to hide, if the current outcome isn't what everyone was expecting you won't be back peddling. Worked for me for 40 years.

If you can terminate without causing yourself much grief it would set a example for the other employees. If not call him in and let him know he is on the poop list. Another lie will be immediate termination.

Telling the truth is something engrained in me by my parents many years ago. Too many people these days lie without hesitation and when confronted with their lies it's always deflect, deny then blame someone else.
It's rare to see someone these days accept responsibility for their actions.

Lots of folks lie about having a bachelor's degree, especially on applications. Many didn't pass a full load of a single semester.

It's no big deal you didn't go to college. You can be a success anyway. Just own it and be comfortable in your own skin.

'Had a kid say he graduated from A&M and played football. (He didn't wear an aggie ring - that shoulda been my first clue. hammer ) He quit before I could fire him. Never sold a dam thing. 'Found out later he did in fact play for A&M - he played 1 play and got injured. And he did attend...for SIX years...no degree.

I think a lot of folks deal with more lies than they think they do, calling in sick, why someone was late, etc.

Lie or steal...you're fired, no exceptions and I will fire them without remorse I don't care who you are.

Yep I hate liars, just like thieves and poachers!

Use to work with a guy who was a true pathological liar, it was easier for him to lie than tell the truth.
Some people lie about other people to try and cover their own transgressions!!

I started a thread back in march (Conflict Resolution Using a Lie Detector Test) hoping certain people would take me up on it, true to form most liars are Chicken Chits also!

This here, an embellishment to a personal story or endeavor, not nearly the same as a job related, detrimental to company's well being or bottom line. Not all lies or fibs are created equal and could open a person up even to wrongful termination claims in some cases.
