I have a little Brittany gyp that wouldn’t hunt a lick at two years old. She was clingy and always underfoot. I would have shot her but she was my wife’s pet. We were heading back to camp downwind after it started raining one afternoon. I threw her out to let her run on the road heading back to camp. All the sudden sh gets birdy and goes upwind under the fence line of the 25K acre ranch we’re hunting on. She looked damn good pointing a covey right over the fence.

I looked at her for a few seconds quivering on point. What do you do in this situation? I jumped the fence shot a bird off the point and she retrieved it. She kept working and found three more singles.

The last day of season that year we let her hunt by herself at the end of the day. We killed 17 pointed bird over her that evening.

6 years later She’s pointed 1000’s of bird and is my youngest sons shadow and best friend. She’s all natural because she’s too soft to train. I wonder what would have happened if I had called her off that first bird because it was over the fence?

She will never be the top dog in my string but she’s got her place and is the only dog that gets to sleep in the house.

I’LL MAKE IT A QUESTION FOR THE DOG MEN:

WOULD YOU JUMP THE FENCE AND SHOOT THE BIRDS
OVER THIS WEAK GYP, OR CALL HER OFF???

Scalebuster. I would have cleared the fence as well, i try to always follow this rule with my bird dog's,, trust but verify,, has paid off many times. Couple years ago I was hunting behind a couple brits and one of them peals off and goes down a pasture road that was freshly graded and locks up on two tumble weeds, the only cover around. She is a quivering statue, I walked up kicked tumble weed and it explodes birds everywhere..... man that was a good shoot.glad I trusted that lil brit.

Scalebuster, Although I am pleading the 5th, the proof is in the pudding. That little Brit learned how to get paid right then and there. When I was about the age of your youngest boy, my grandpa that taught me how to train a bird dog told me “the first time your dog does everything right, shoot the bird for it, and don’t miss”.

My old Papaw said the EXACT same thing. I’m glad we have good shock collars now. The way he trained bird dogs looks a lot different than the way I do! Luckily I’ve never had to pick a Pointer up by the ears and beat him up against the side of the truck.

I’m now listening my to my boy drying this dog off after a bath with a blow dryer. How the world has changed since Papaws day.

Catching some rays before the arctic blast.

I’ve had to put down a couple this year. The 8 yo pointer gyp at the first of the year had cancer. The 17 yo Britt today, she was just at the end of her life. They were both great bird dogs and hunted together for several years.

Never easy losing a good dog,mostly like losing your best friend.

Decided to take my two year old pointer dove hunting - He did alright staying put, and was a big help when they hit the ground.

That’s a very well mannered pointer.

Thank you, but truth be told, He is actually a total pain in the [censored] normal pointer. I have really tried to work obedience with this one. After two years - we have a pretty good connection going. But, he is a high drive All Age type dog that is very mischievous and too smart.

Collar wise and always wants to know what's going on in the next county..... but I like him.

In the past I had a Vizsla and hunted with other Vizsla/GSPs. I have started telling people that having a pointer is like having a race prepped track car as a daily driver. The Vizsla/GSPs were like a nice F-150 with AC and radio. Both can get you where you want to go BUT one will get you there at 200 mph with the possibility of just ending in a fire ball for the day.

There’s been times I would have crossed the fence, and times I just didn’t call the young dog back to me.
The people that leased the other property, were on it hunting that day. Shine has had 100s of birds killed over her, so I kept her on our side. They won’t have that lease the last month of quail season, and I can take her back.

Raining day so I put bird seed out, so the squirrels and tweety birds could entertain the dogs. I’ve had a friends puppy over for a couple of weeks. Taking her out to the fields, doing bird and gunfire intro. As I love playing with puppies. Anyway, I look outside and see tons of style on the 5 month old puppy. She’s just pointing tweety birds, but hasn’t moved for that spot for few minutes.

Thanks! That was some of the only decent dog work we had yesterday. It was hot and dry. The dogs couldn’t smell much at all. We had trouble finding dead birds. My eyes were better than the dogs noses yesterday. Had good dogs walk over dead birds.
Today was much different. This morning was cold with a little moisture. We put two green pups on the ground this morning and they found more bird by 9AM than the good dogs did all day yesterday. It was fun to watch! The pups learned a LOT today.

I should send my pup with you.

This was an unproductive point, bit it sure looked good. End up with 3 coveys moved, one pointed with about 10 birds in it.

Had a great morning, in some brutal weather. The nastier it got, the better the dogs worked. 35° and a 15 mph NE wind. Front blew in and it turned drizzly. My 13 month old pointer gyp had the light switch on. She had 5 productive points, her first on wild birds. The other 3 older dogs had 3 finds, one with a nice back.
Only pic I got was of Chet’s gyp Toady.

It seems like our best hunts are in that kind of weather. She is a classy looking dog!

If you let her she’ll go out 400 yards, typical horse back FT dog. She’s starting to learn learn what I need her to do.
