Are your kids youths? If so the non resident youth license is $7. I hunt out of state as a non resident and the license and tag surpasses $300 easily.

Sounds like they're minors. Do they charge a different price for non-resident minors? I was under the impression that the price (which is all of $7 each) is the same regardless of residency.

Good point. Jmartin622, what species are you wanting to hunt? If you're looking to hunt pigs on a friend's place or on public just once, the $50 license might be just what you need. In fact, if you're hunting pigs on a friend's place, you don't even need a license now. If you're looking to hunt exotics with an outfitter just once, the $50 will be all you need and the $300 license will pale in comparison to the price tag on the animal you'll likely shoot.

Just explain to your kids that this year they won't be able to hunt and spend the $300 dollars to hunt yourself. Kids have plenty of future years to hunt.

Resident and Nonresident licenses for kids under 17 are just $7.00.
Pay the $300.00 this year and take your kids hunting. It’s a great investment.

It's also great here non residents get the exact same amount of tags as residents.

Very nice sentiment, but risky business. People are NUTZ! (And there's more than a few complete whack-jobs on this very site.)

When I first got to TX after retiring ftom the USN I had several people make me offers like that. I would hope that sort of good will still exists

Shoot... I spent $300 just applying for draw hunts. Between gas, food, processing etc I spend $300 hunting on a family member's place for "free." I have a limit I'd pay, but it sure ain't $300.

THIS!!

I just spent way more than $300 buying my license, my wife's license and applying for hunts.

Hey man do you really want to complain about Texas when in VA they are indoctrinating kids in to being the opposite sex of what they really are?

Hunting is expensive in Texas. We have very little public land here to hunt and a good buck or exotic to shoot starts at $5000,. A night of pig hunting is $400 to $500 dollars. It sounds like you are too broke to hunt. Maybe you should take up golf because fishing isnt any cheaper.

He should enjoy the Off Topic area.

Shocked by $300 for a license to hunt? He’s in for a surprise coming to Texas.

To be determined

Well ethics come into play there, you pretty much have to swear an oath that you are a resident when you buy a resident license. Yes, one could lie to get that license and show their lack of morals or ethics.

You are not getting off on the right foot here sir. Your first impression is not going to endear you to many here sir. You can’t buy a resident license here before you are a legal resident of the state of Texas is why. That is reserved for legal residents, just like in every other state. Lots of Texans are already pretty sore about the influx of
folks from a lot of other states moving to Texas post 2020 and wanting to bring the politics of where they came from with them. Coming here and bellyaching about Texas, to Texans, before you are even a resident will not get you much sympathy from most Texans.
I said that about as nice as I could.

Nothing personal but please don’t start that pity party BS of poor hunters chit on here. You’ve been here 3 minutes and I already think you’re a DB from your comments. I suggest going back home and hunting your own state and leave us the hell alone, I’ll pitch in on the first tank of fuel if it helps out…

You might consider Michigan, I hear they have a poor foundry worker up there looking for a hunting buddy and you guys could probably car pool to save on fuel costs flag dunce welcome stir angel salute

I tried offering some cordial advice but he may have been run off before getting a chance to see it. I understand he was whining but I think sometimes we forget as Texans how much more accessible hunting is for residents in other states in those lower income brackets. A lot of them can practically walk out the front door onto public land where they can practice and hunt without needing any more than the cost of the license, ammo and a little gear.

For the record we get lots of complaints about NR hunting license costs from Texas folks, oh the irony !!!

And yep, plenty of ways to hunt without spending $300, been doing it for years down there.
Know your residency laws where you plan to move is all I would say.

I'd like to also add, that while we live here in the great state of Texas, why don't know why the State does pretty much anything so dead_horse

Well you inadvertently kicked the hornets nest.

Folks on here are kinda sensitive about immediately hearing smack.

Welcome!! I understand that 300.00 for some folks is a hardship. I have been there,

You do come from a state that also has a 6 month residency requirement so Texas ain't so bad.

You will have a longer season here with far more variety and a much more welcoming environment then in Virginia although you may not believe yet it!!!

Get your kids the 7.00 license and they can hunt everything You can hunt hogs free and fill the freezer with some great protein

The sense of entitlement is my biggest issue with the whole topic.

If you stop and think about it, it is not even about $300 because a license has to be bought in the first place.

OP may be out $300 for the NR license, but a Super Combo runs $68. This whole rant is actually just over $232!

This whole discussion makes me think back to the first time I killed a bull elk 16 years ago. All kinds of people were asking me for meat, specifically for smoked sausage, making the assumption that I had all kinds of "free" meat to give them. They were completely oblivious to how much that "free" meat actually cost me. My point is hunting is not free. It costs a whole lot less money and takes much less effort to go to grocery store and buy beef. If you're not willing to pay and put in the effort, don't complain about it and go find another hobby.

Exactly. People ask me to take them to my lease like it's a trip to the lake. Another reason why we don't have a guest policy. We just don't allow them.

I had done that math myself. And he said he duck hunts-isn’t there an extra charge for that?? We may have it whittled down to well under $200….

-$68 Super combo, $25 Federal Duck Stamp, $48 Public Hunting permit as a Texas resident

-Non resident archery deer hunt Oklahoma $300 and then another $300 if you want to rifle hunt

Seems $300 non resident in Texas is cheap...
