When I was in MD Anderson back in about 1990, I had to fill out a loose leaf binder full of questions, a lot of which had to do with how many bad sunburns I had as a teen, and how bad were they. Who remembers that? I did get the feeling that sunburns as a kid must be important.

As for the rest of the questions in that big binder, they were personal like you wouldn’t believe. If they still do that, and if your wife is with you when you fill out the questions, you do NOT want her looking over your shoulder.

Had one cut off my shoulder 25 years ago. I started keeping a shirt on. My dad and I were at Amistad when he was still alive and I tossed him the sunscreen. I said I wish we would have had this stuff when I was a kid. He told me that it was available but he wouldn’t buy it. Sorry old bastard had most of his ears cut off before he died. I remember my mother and grandmother putting vinegar on us to take the sting out of the burn. I’m not that old. I was born in “75 and thought sunscreen wasn’t available until I was in my teens.

Wow, that brought back some memories. Had many a sunburn as a kid and in my teens. My best friends younger sister used to love peeling skin off folks.

glad you caught yours early. I am up to 48 now either frozen (the majority) or cut out with 24 being mohs surgery.

worst one was on top of my head, took a while for it to heal.

get checked at least once a yr. even if you have never had any problems. I now go every 3-4 months

I just had the MOHS surgery Thursday behind my ear. It was only about a two inch cut but it is the fourth time I have been cut on in the last year, They also froze three other places trying to keep me from losing more of my ear which has already been cut on twice. A spot on my nose was also sprayed to hopefully keep it from being cut on. Those summer tans were not worth any of this so if you are a younger person do like was said and use some kind of protection.

Heck, when I was a kid, there was no protection from sunburn, and we didn’t know we needed it. The girls, if memory is correct, rubbed on a mix of iodine and Baby Oil, thinking it would help them get the perfect tan. I was enlisted to help rub occasionally, and was thrilled to be of assistance.

After my sister was diagnosed with melanoma 8 years ago, we all got tested and we all carry the gene for it. Our paternal grandmother lost her left eye in 1974 to ocular melanoma and in 1989 in came back in her liver and then her brain in 1998. So, yeah...not a question of if, more of a question of when. I had my first scare at 18 when a mole went atypical and was trying to change to melanoma. They got it in time, but I've had a few scares since...fortunately, I have not been diagnosed with melanoma yet.

I’ve had the Moh’s surgery twice now - arm and right temple. Now have regular visits to the dermatologist, every 6 months.

Years ago I had a business lunch with a husband and wife. Both were suppliers to the company I worked for and split the cost of having business lunches with me. They were good people, and fun. The hubby said that his wife had just bought new towels. White towels to replace brown towels. He said he dried his back when he got out of the shower and there was blood on the towel. Went to the doctor and it was stage 4 melanoma. He lasted 2 years. An ugly way to go.

Go see the doctor…

I had a biopsy on a spot on my back (which I couldn't see) and yesterday went back to get the rest of it scraped off. So I thought. It was a pre-melanoma asymmetrical mole. New one for me. I've got stitches now and am back on the three month exam plan.

Saw a Dermatologist for the first time this morning. She asked a lot of family history questions including my lineage. Checked me over from head to toe. No real problems found except a seborrheic keratosis on the side of my face which she froze with liquid nitrogen. Also said I had some toenail fungus. One thing she recommended was to get into a daily routine of applying sunscreen in the morning like right after brushing your teeth.

Itching is also a sign of healing.

No swelling or inflammation. At the one week mark i think it's healing. It's not constant.
