I built one 7.62X39 AR-style rifle but never shot it. I have an AK variant though. You missed the boat on cheap 7.62X39 ammo when the Russian imports started going away because Golden Tiger is the best steel case you can (could) buy. It was $0.32 per round shipped when I got what I got. You have to get it off GunBroker now and it's $0.65 per round and up now. It's better stuff than some brass case reload-able ammo. The cheapest non-corrosive right now is $0.49 and looks really sketchy.

Long and short is I don't think you're saving anything at all going to 7.62X39 once you pay for all the parts to convert and buy decent ammo.

5.56X45 will do the job and it's $0.60 per round for good ammo ... until tomorrow. It'll be over a dollar per round soon ... and so will 7.62X39.

Pass the gravy.
