Well guys I am sick of paying high prices for ammo. I love my wilson combat 6.8 Barnes ammo except for the price. Extremely reliable and accurate and it kills hogs. Bideneconomics is hitting me hard and for 2 years I havent been to the range because 6.8 is ridiculous now in pricing. Before a hunt I go and shoot 10 rounds to make sure my rifle is functioning properly and on the mark but thats it. And that sucks !! Over the last few years I have been trying to consolidate down to 30-06 9mm 22lr and switching my AR to 762x39 now. I figure with at least 50 million rifles in this world still shooting 762 I think it will be around for a long time and it should be one of the cheapest around for awhile also. I keep seeing old reports of guys just killing hogs with fmj's and having a lot of success. I dont mind spending a lot of money on my rifle but bullets is a whole other ballgame. The cheaper the better because it just goes up in smoke. If I can get away with shooting pigs successfully with fmj for less than 50 cents a round then why not. Buy a few thousand rounds and I am set for a long time in that case.

Just looking for guys with some real world experience.

thanks

You can get the PPU pointed soft points for 12-15 bucks for 20, that's what I use. They're pretty accurate in my SKS, definitely better than the russkie steel case. S&B has a cheap soft point load too I've heard good things about.

I use Wolf 122 - 123 grain fmj. Works like a charm. Just got another 1000 rounds last Wednesday. I use the steel case for two reasons. First my guns eat them and when they are shot from a chopper they are gone and I don't feel bad about losing brass!!

I guess I will experiment with the fmj soft points and hollow points. In gelatin the soft points and hollow points really do look better. I just went to academy and they were cleaned out basically. They had some SST's for $30 and some winchester fmjs for 70 cents a round. I dont have the rifle yet but the build should be complete by October so I am starting my search for ammo as I assemble the rifle piece by piece.

Bolt gun or AR platform?
If AR platform, you may need to polish and possibly widen the feed ramps on barrel extension a little.
Some of the soft tips and even the HPs may hang up on them.
Some barrel manufacturers just stick on a standard barrel extension cut for .22 bullets instead of getting one cut for .30 bullets causing the ammo tip to ride up too high and jam when feeding.
7.62x39 was all I used for years on pigs in SKS and AR and they do work pretty well but I switched to 6.8 as I reload and bought lots of SSTs before stuff got crazy.

I have been reading about the problems with AR's and 762 for years now. I have not switched in the past because of all of the problems that round causes in an AR DI platform. But the PWS's long stroke piston system has been around long enough now that it is regarded as being a very reliable platform in that cartridge. They are expensive but they appear to be a quality weapon. I am taking the plunge. Assembling and getting my lower sbr'd now. Hopefully next month I will be ready to pick up an upper. I dont plan on doing anything at all to the upper as they appear to be spot on from the factory. We will see what happens. I found 1000 rounds of fmj's from a buddy at work that he bought years ago and he is giving them to me for yesterdays prices. Its slowly coming together.

my AR in 68 doesn't appear to like my suppressor very well. The accuracy is fine but if I dont clean it after what seems like every 20 rounds things start happening. I plan on shooting every round from now on suppressed so the 68 is going to be a back up collecting dust.

No hesitation. Killed well over 50-60 pigs with fmj rounds out of the sks at shorter ranges. Neck or head shots will put them down, if not, you got a quick follow up shot(s) (sks’s don’t jam). Cheap wolf ammo is all I’ve ever used.
I do prefer the wolf hollow point but Ill shoot what I have on hand at the moment…

Thanks Yakblue. I will definitely try the fmj's on a few hogs but if It looks like the hollow points and soft points are really the way to go.

Come on ATF. Hopefully 30 to 40 days for form1. We will see. My lower is basically done and not far from being 100% ready to go.

Most of the cheap 762x39 hp are about as effective as fmj according to ballistic gel test I’ve seen. Check into it, I wouldn’t want anyone wasting money if they don’t need to.

Not sure who you are asking pics from but here is my SBR build coming along nicely.

Geiselle's longbow X trigger SSAE-X
Geiselle's super duty parts kit
Dead air key mo flash hider
3x C product's AR mags (20 rounders)
Geiselle braided super 42 buffer spring and H2 buffer

All I need now is a bolt to attach my grip, more ammo, approval for SBR stamp and a PWS MK111 Mod2 upper.

I used a 7.62 x 39 pistol I bought from Bear Creek Arsenal for $475 awhile back. Love shooting this thing. I will say, after shooting the Wolf/Tula Ammo and other cheap ones, I had some failures. Decided to change out the BCG about 3 months ago with a FailZero nickel from Palmetto State. Since then this thing eats whatever, but, I have been hunting with Hornady Black lately.

Another good cheap ammo for shooting or training (haven't hunted with) is the Norma Tactical ammo. Gun store I go to locally had it on sale for $10.99 a box. I think Academy has it on hand from time to time as well for a little more.

Arriving tomorrow is 640 rounds of 154 grain Tulammo soft points from SGammo.(61 cents per round including shipping) That plus the 950 rounds I bought from my buddy of mixed ammo for 30 cents a round ought to be a good start for me. Now if only the ATF would approve me. 50 days in now. My next hog hunt starts on the first day of deer season so I have about 2.5 weeks to get approval, get the upper and get it sighted in before then. Come on ATF!

When I used an SKS for swine, I had better luck with some
123 gr hp ammo I bought. It did better out of mine than
the 154 gr SP's accuracy wise, and did just as good
calming unruly swine
Now that has been when they were all 2 some-odd
for a box of 20, so I couldn't say for what might be
out there today

The great thing about 762x39 is that you really cant find a cheaper cartridge. Lets hope it stays that way. I have plenty of 123 gr also. Most of it is 123 gr. Hogs dont care what they get shot with. I am excited to hopefully put it to use here very soon as see how it does up close and personal. Most of my shots in my upcoming hunts are usually shots within 50 yards so it will all work I think. I just hope I can get approved beforehand or I will be hunting with my 6.8.

Bideneconomics ?

The prices skyrocketed way b4 Biden.
The real reason of the high prices is due ta the Rep.
Scaretactisc's They gonna take your guns away.
& everyone buying up large quantifies.

Supply & Demand
Supplies go down, demand goes up.
Prices go up.
Feeding thar agenda.

During the Trump years. Ammo was hard ta find. People buying up ammo,
driving up prices.
Biden in, shelves full of ammo.

stir it will be the Trumpsters blinded by the bs he spreads
Who will snap back, whine & cry that rake offense ta this post.
rofl i take no offense ta thar reactions, they dud vote for him.
popcorn

Was in a gun store, whin one of the owners asked the ammo sales person if prices are gonna go down.
cheers your not the only one that complains about the prices.
Salesman said they gonna stay, as long as people will spend.

My hobbie is slinger fast drawing, & target shooting. Can't afford it these days.

80's after deer season, on first lease 1,100acre, got on. Hunted hogs @ night, flash light off, they see the light from distance. Sit, & wait, head towards hogs, make sure of target.
With the AR, on WMA, AR .223 cheap fmj, only one didn't recover.
@ my set up behind house, mil.dot scope over, with Lazer under, zeroed in close range.
Shots on WMA, we're close in thick areas.

Stay Safe & keep after em.
Miss my hog hunts on WMA, could spend all day & rarely see another hunter.

If ya end up not happy with the FMJ, you can always buy a hand-press and a cam-lock bullet puller,
and yank those fmj boolits out and replace with same-grain SP bullet. Or BallisticTip bullet(s) for some more-accurate work.
'Course you'll need a bullet-seater die (and a maybe a Lee factory-crimp die) to set new bullets back in.

I like doing this ^ with .223 ammo, cause factory SP or BT's rounds cost stupid money,
and the 'reworked' rounds always shoot smaller groups with quality boolits grin .

For sure bidenomics. My rent is up, groceries are way up, insurance went up, gas is up, everything is way up and I mean every single item that one can buy is up. And for sure it is because of the fools that were dumb enough to vote democrat. I wouldnt blame bullets on Biden because that was PreBiden for sure but because everything else has eaten up my paycheck I have to switch to this round if I want to shoot anymore. Please dont tell me you are a democrat. I am sorry but I have no respect at all for democrats. I will keep my mouth shut now before I go on a rant.
