I watched this guy last year as a large 4pt who was rutting hard. I waited too long trying to get a double of him and the doe he was with (and also to see what else might show up that day). Now he's just a 5pt with a small brow on one side. If I see him I'm going to load him in the truck.

I’ve never had the fortune having the opportunity to designate cull buck versus shooter buck. It’s always been hey there is a buck. But that is changing now with my newest place. I have a question that I would like genuine response. We have a small place. Surrounded by other hunters on 3 sides. So doubtful this buck would make it anyways. But let’s say it did…is there any chance a buck like this could grow spread? That’s the only thing it is missing at the moment. Or is a basket always going to be a basket?

His general frame shape is not going to change, or open up like your wanting it to.

Agree. But he looks good just like he is.

If this dude is a wide 6, he'll fit the bill, meets AR restrictions and older than 4-5 yo.
Yep, he sure might. I've got one like that. This guy was a big six last year; so far this year he's added a tiny brow on one side. I thought he was 3 last year; he may need to go.
Here is a HF cull from a few years back on my buddy's Hill Country ranch. I hunted him hard with no luck. The 1st year we saw him he was a 6 & the next year a 9. The 2 pictures are 1 year apart. He was only seen on the cameras twice in his whole life. We're pretty sure he is the same deer in both photo's. Never did find his sheds either.

That was my thinking when I shot a 14" 10pt with 4" bases a week ago. My brother is saying I need to be shooting 8s and crab claws. I say we also need to be shooting the older deer with narrow genetics. We have those also. Discussion could get interesting next time at the lease.
