What is the plan for pre-emergent if you lawn went dormant a month ago due to lack of water? Do I still put it down?

I used a McClane for 2yrs and wasn't really impressed either. My main issue is I didn't like the height of cut adjustment and the blade gap adjustment. The McClane and Cal overall design is pretty similar but the adjustments on the Cal are so much better. I've been pleased with it. Specially since I found it used for $700 and it was only a year old.

If you're having a quality of cut issue then obviously backlap it. Zoysia is pretty rough on reels and need lapping often. Are you mowing at full throttle? If so try it at half or 1/4 throttle. 1/2 or below has really helped my cut quality.

how much winter rye per thousand sq. ft is good for north texas? and anyone know the setting on a scotts clasic drop spreader to use to achieve it?

10lbs per 1000 is avg.

Per Scotts. Scotts Drop Spreaders - Set to 10 for reseeding, set to 15 for New Lawn or Bare Spot Repair.

thanks. couldnt find it online and i looked hard. even called scotts, they told me set it on two or three, put 10lbs in it and push til empty, measure how much ground i covered and adjust accordingly! wtf? thanks derek from ennis, much better than scott from scotts.

Worst case start at 5 and work your way up or make multiple passes. What rye did you go with? Seed has gotten $$$.

That probably wasn't bad then. Maybe like $50 for 50bs and assuming it's annual rye and not perennial? Are you doing a winter lawn or just doing some erosion control for winter? If lawn I'd go Perennial and erosion I wouldn't really care either/or if you're planning on seeding and not touching it over winter.. Either way I'd like to see pics of your winter progress with it and how it goes.

It's not too late. Go to TSC or your feed store and get the cheapest Annual rye they have. You're not looking for perennial turf type rye. They will have Pennington or Barenbrug or some other cheap type. Get whatever. Seed it heavy at 10lbs per 1000, Granted you would like to have some irrigation on for germination, but after tonight's flooding rains and if you seed tomorrow there should be plenty of moisture for germ. IDK where Poppa is located but there is a good chance if he's in NTX and seeded it washed away with this rain or settled in a central location. Anyway, if you can seed now and once temps rebound late next week your germ should be good, It's a FAFO deal and why I recommend getting the cheapest seed you can get. Spread it, walk away and see what happens. I think the soil moisture will work in your favor if you get it down soon. I'd like to hear/see updates on your winter progress if you seed too.

rite, annual rye overseeding Bermuda lawn. was waiting on this rain to put it out. prolly early next week, dont want it washing away or puddling up like you said. im a little nw of forney.

I`ve never understood why you guys want to plant rye grass for the winter other than for erosion issues. I`m always ready for the first hard freeze so my Bermuda can go to sleep for the next few months, and I can do a reset for next year. I enjoy maintaining and mowing my lawn from early spring until about the first of August, especially the past 2 years with extreme heat and no FN rain. Must be a city thing.

I'm the same way, can't wait for my grass to go dormant. I don't mind mowing and maintaining it when we're out side all the time in the Spring, Summer, and Fall, but once it is too cold to go outside, I definitely do not want to maintain it.

i like the green lawn in the winter. it has some benefits too, helps keep weeds out and helps the bermuda get started in the spring. least thats what they say! its more fun mowing in February than august too.
