Heading to the bottom of the 9th up 8-3, I just don't understand the need to keep him in there. Through 8 innings, he already threw 130 pitches. Yes, Texas scored 5 in the 9th the day before, but that's highly improbable to happen 2 days in a row. This was Mathews' 3rd third appearance in 10 days, and he threw 330 pitches.

I read this stat, which is mind boggling:
Stanford pushed Matthews to 156 pitches. Last MLB pitcher to throw that many was Tim Wakefield in 1997. Last non-knuckleballer to do it was a 33-year-old Roger Clemens in 1996.

The College Coach's could care less after the kids leave. Didn't Augie pitch Clemons every other game? Of course, Roger had good medical advice.

Cliff Gustafson was the Texas coach during Clemens' time at UT. 1983 was well before my time when Clemens left UT, but I don't think that sounds accurate that he pitched every other game. Texas also had Calvin Schiraldi on that team and he was extremely dominant as an All American and 1st round MLB pick. They also had Mike Capel as a starter.

To say they were loaded would be an understatement.

Right Augie was out at Cal State Fullerton then and did win a CWS there and 2 at UT.

Don't forget Spike Owen and the big, Hispanic 1st baseman. Jose Tolentino IIRC. I believe Mike Brumley was the 2B, Dennis Cook in the OF and pitched.

WOW! What a way to lose a Super Regional!! Stanford to Omaha. That had to be the best Super Regional of the series.

I can’t ever recall a season ending play like that one. Especially since Campbell was the one who tied it up with his RBI single.

Very disappointed in both the Aggies and Longhorns. Both go to Stanford, take the first game and then choke.
