The wife has chosen Durango as our next RV destination. Going in August. Never been there. Any suggestions on things to do, where to eat, things to see? And what else needs visiting when going there or coming back to Texas? Other than Allsups, that is…

We plan to do the train ride. On Sunday we head to South Fork, CO for 40 days.

Not sure where you are staying but in researching Durango RV parks, we decided to stay somewhere else.

The wife says she’ll book us at a RV place called Outdoorsy, but it she hasn’t done it yet. I’ll look up Bruce Spruce.

We’ll do the train ride.

Outdoorsy looks great. Reviews are excellent.

Highly recommend RV Life Trip Wizard.

Durango was good, we were there in 2015 for a week. We rode the train, went rafting on the Animas, hiked, and rode some trails. Food was decent, but never found “really good”. There are plenty of places that have bar food that were OK. The steak place we went to was gawd awful, the bagel I had the next morning from the place by the train station made a better meal.

Turkey H- I bet you like South Fork, some long time friends of mines parents go every year and stay from Memorial day to Labor day, and really enjoy it.

Ate at a BBQ joint in Durango last year that was surprisingly good. It was called "Serious Texas BBQ"

Chimney Rock is a very interesting place for a short easy hike.

You will probably be there during monsoon season. Should be cool, make sure you have a good raincoat. Go explore the San Juan mountains. The views are incredible from Telluride to Ouray and on to Silverton.

Avoid the town of Durango. It’s a liberal cesspool. The country surrounding it is beautiful.

Bunch of idiots running that town. Calirado is quickly becoming a place I don’t ever want to go back to. Silverton banned any OHV from entering the town, stating noise pollution. Yet when the it was brought up about the motorcycles coming in droves, the OHV riders were told they don’t spend money like the motorcycle groups.

Silverton and its band of idiots is leading the charge to have all motorized vehicles banned from the Alpine Loop.

Durango sucks. There are much nicer places in Colorado, and it oddly hot there.

Coincidentally that’s the place I’ve seen the most open carry citizens.

If you like adventure, there’s summer activities at the ski resort, and a cool little bar on the left about a half mile south. Spend a day and drive up to Ouray, even rent a jeep and go off road above the tree line. We did a trail over to Telluride that took us by several old mines and obviously great views.
Consider Durango a hub to venture from. You could spend an afternoon in downtown with the wife shopping and dining, getting groceries, but I wouldnt waste too much time there. Yes, the train is the highlight for the area, so plan on that. Mesa Verde National park is worth checking out. Check the temps though because it was unpleasant in July. The fly shop downtown could help set you up on a guided trip if you’re into fishing.
Restaurants, Steamworks Brewery is pretty good, Fired up pizza is decent.. stay away from Serious Texas BBQ unless you prefer your bbq boiled with a side of food poisoning.

We've had a lot of fun Rving in Silverton in years past. Yes there was talk about 1 "little old lady" who didn't want OHV coming into town, which costs the business owners lots of money. There is lots of dry camping just outside the town limits of Silverton. If you stay at the RV parks in town, you can easily walk the whole town.

Never cared to stay in Durango, always felt it was too uppity

Sheldon, when you go to Southlake CO, take a trip to Creed and drive the loop north of town.

A good placre to see is https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/riogrande/recarea/?recid=29118 just to the west of Creed.

Here's a great place to eat on the way up or back from the falls, https://www.menupix.com/colorado/restaurants/380250698/Freemons-General-Store-Creede-CO.

Another thing to check out is the Fire Station in Creed...it's located in a cave just North of town. You can walk in and check it out.

There's a parade in Del Norte Aug 4th. Fun time, just a small town America parade.

You're closest Walmart is in Alamosa. FYI the parking lot can be tricky for RV's when they're busy.

Hope that helps.

Wife and I really enjoy going to that area of Colorado but only do a day visit to Durango because we don't go up there for the city stuff. Look at the Bayview area and Lake Vallecito. We stay on the lake in cabins and use it for our home base. You can do a day trip to Durango, Ouray, and Pagosa Springs without the hassle of staying in a city. If you go to Ouray your shoulders better be in good shape as the drive is very curvy and exciting. They have RV places on the lake and close to it but I have no information about how they are. There is also some good hole in the wall places to eat that have really good food in Bayview. Like someone said if you like fly fishing for trout there is lots of place to do that and if you want you can pan for gold. If I still have my gold mining stuff I can loan it to you but I will have to dig it out of storage. If you like casino's there is a small one in Ignacio NM that is only 30 minutes away.

Here is the place we are planning to stay in sometime in July if all things work out. Look at the views of the lake to see what to expect up there on the lake. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/494988...2HRpsgY6&modal=PHOTO_TOUR_SCROLLABLE

I think you would like Ouray better than Durango. Ouray Riverside Resort is a nice RV park. You will drive the Million Dollar Highway between Silverton and Ouray. Rent a Jeep and do some mountain trails. Without experience I wouldn't suggest Black Bear Pass. I think it claims a few lives about every year. There are plenty of other trails that will show you some scenery you will never forget. I would pick the Jeep over a side-by-side because of climate control. You can go from summer temps to freezing at altitude, as well as stay dry during pop up rain showers that aren't even on their forecast.
