The hog my neighbor trapped yesterday, the one in my pen knife post, was different. It was physically pretty big, but it was lean and rangy, not thick. And it had that raised bristle on the ridge of the back. It just didn’t look like what we’ve been shooting and trapping this year. The tusks weren’t very big, but we think it was a young boar. Maybe he just hadn’t filled out yet, though his frame was large and his hooves were quite big. Looked like a fighter.
Is there a different subspecies moving into central Texas.

We have one on camera that sounds similar to what you describe. Bigger than the average size boar on our place, not by a lot though. But definitely a "meaner looking" and the other pigs give him a wide berth when he shows up, usually just leaving the feeder all together.

Is there a different subspecies moving into central Texas. There are different breeds of hogs the contribute to our feral hog population, They come with a variety of different visible traits, sometimes even from the same litter.

Check this out. Traits of at least three different breeds of hogs showing up in a single litter. Some people think a striped hog means "Russian" blood line and that just isn't the case unless you realize they all have "Russian" hog in them as they are the parents of domestic hogs. Very interesting. I guess this ‘battle’ pig we skinned is just one of a mixed litter. Come to think of it, my brothers and sisters don’t all look alike.

I had a big hog that had very short hair. I watched him in only three months grow very long hair and cutters, and it even looked like body structure (not just size) changed and he gained about 75 pounds. He changed a lot. I need to find pictures. I suppose they come in all shapes and sizes, and can change.

I see hundreds of them every day. They come in all shapes and colors. I have some totally blonde ones too.
