If I was in Africa hunting other Game animals and they had a nuisance Elephant that they needed to get rid of, I would do that.
I have probably watched about 20 videos of Elephant hunting over my 67 years, most of them are like posted above. The hunter and two or three people backing them up with big guns they causally walk up to this giant animal, usually when the Elephant finally sees you it turns towards you for an easy shot, sometimes they do a half azz bluff charge to try and scare you away.. And if you the hunter does not kill the elephant on the first shot then most of the time all of his backups start shooting it too,
Yes there are some wild videos of an actually spot and stalk hunt where the Elephant knows it was being hunted and tried to elude the hunters then finally gave up and charged them Also great videos where a hunter shoots a big bull and charges the hunter and he keeps his cool and puts a couple of more slugs in it as it drops dead right in front of him that is crazy exciting chit for the backups never fired a shot.
Not ragging on anyone who does like it, more power to them!

They seem pretty easy to “sneak up” on. But, I have no knowledge other than videos……

I hunted elephant for 9 days last year after taking a leopard on day 5, most exciting hunting i have ever done- no comparison. Have been fortunate taking 6 200” Texas mule deer, and alot of Cape Buffalo, but nothing compares to being up close to a group of elephants in the thick stuff

They seem pretty easy to “sneak up” on. But, I have no knowledge other than videos…… From my limited experience of being around true big game animals ( buffalo, rhino, giraffe, bear, etc. ) is they don’t have the fear that a prey animal like a deer or antelope does. At best most are indifferent to your presence, at worst, they will attack you. You don’t have to “sneak up “ on them to get within range, as they have few to no natural predators once they reach adult size, so they are not afraid. It’s a totally different type of hunting that we are used to, which is targeting an animal that has many predators in their natural environment
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Curiosity question.
What is the thrill of shooting a Giraffe, are they hard to hunt, pose a danger to the hunter? Never watched a video so no clue.

I've shot one old "stink bull" giraffe. I wouldn't do it again, but that's me. The meat was all utilized and I look at the huge skull all the time. I had several things made out of the hide.

What is the thrill of shooting a Giraffe, are they hard to hunt, pose a danger to the hunter? Never watched a video so no clue. They are just a big animal. People form their opinions on them by what they see on TV and watching them walk around in a round pen in a zoo....they are not like that in real life. Go to an area where they are in their natural environment and you will have a different opinion of them. They are able to camouflage themselves extremely well....we were stalking a herd of gemsbok and ended up in the middle of a herd of giraffes....had no clue they were there until we were surrounded by about 7 of them. I've never heard of them attacking a hunter but they could stop a person with little issue. I declined to shoot one as I didn't have the room for the Hide/Skull but I have no issues with a person shooting one....the meat must be good because the skinners were almost begging me to kill one.

Ive always wondered why most of the PH don't use a sling on their rifle
Seems like it would be a PIA to carry it how they do they are in front with a locked and cocked rifle. They know exactly where the muzzle is pointed

African Plains game and Cape Buffalo, yes. Elephant, only if it was him or me. But I'm more inclined to shoot one now than when I was younger.
2025, I expect, will be my one and only African trip...If the liver holds.

I haven't had the meat, but I understand that they have fat in the meat, more like beef than most game animals. When I hunted South Africa in 2003, the first place we stayed had a trophy room with a giraffe mount in it. I really liked it.

I hear that having giraffe hides processed is quite expensive because of the thickness.

An elephant is definitely on my list, but I don't know if its going to happen in this lifetime. On my first safari in 2012 they had a problem elephant at one of the farms. He chasing and bullying the trackers and ranch hands. He was a young male just thrown out of the herd and very mischievous. I still regret turning it down. It seemed really expensive at the time, but in retrospect it was dirt cheap. Still have a leopard to go in Africa, big horn sheep, muskox, and Spanish ibex that take priority over the Elephant.

I've watched too many nature documentaries on the African animals. I have no desire to kill and elephant or a giraffe. I'd like to have a couple of giraffes on my place. No leaves on the tress up to 16' off the ground sounds good to me. Talk about a high fence project!

Hunting Africa has little temptation for me. I want to bring home the bacon with hunts I go on, if I can’t keep the meat it looses most of its appeal for me. Still think I would enjoy buffalo and some of the plains game but no meat pretty well makes it a no go for me.

In the African safari books I've read they always talk about how great the teal taste there. I know Hemingway and Bell mention it specifically. Have any of you done bird/waterfowl hunting in Africa?

I have two buddies that have killed them. One of the bulls they had 7 hunters try to kill. old old bull that was killing younger males. I think they are like any other game animal pressure makes them sporty

I've killed exactly one spur-wing goose. I couldn't get on guineas to save my life, unfamiliar shotgun, etc., but, I'm an awful shotgun shot regardless. I think Hemmingway and/or Ruark wrote about Francolin a lot too.

Anybody but me ever wonder why we don’t have any of these animals over here?
Lions, elephants, gorillas, etc?
And I mean free range…
Where they ever here?
