Got some loading done last night. gonna try some of these. Does anyone have a bolt action rifle that ISNT a ruger? I want to build one (16") on a R700 print or Howa1500
Does anyone have some barrel recommendations?
We build one Howa and 3 Kimber 84Ms but due to gun availability and ease of conversion we settled on the Ruger Ranch to make barrels for.
My little group of hunters used three different Wilson/Ruger Ranch Rifles this years, and they have all did well! They are MOA rifles and handled rather well in the deer stand. They are not expensive custom rifles, but at the same time, we don't have to worry about dinging a high-in stock or throwing the rifle into a rifle rest on an ATV. My personal rifle took an eight pointer and it loved the 110 CC from Lehigh. ( Granted, my shot was well under 20 yards.)

Was the Remington 700 print not feasible? Ill get a ruger and a small magazine when i find one. Thank you so much for all the help and replies in this awesome thread.
We had a friend come from North Carolina last week to hog hunt with my Son in Law. The cartridge on the left is a 458 Ham’r next to a 300 Ham’r That was the caliber he used

some people like silver and gold I like brass and lead with a little powder in between
I really like my Ruger 300 HAM’R. It is very accurate and deadly. This from a hunt this morning and the top group is a 3 shot group on the range today.
Thought I'd add this as it might be helpful to some:
I bought a 16" HAMR barrel last summer (fantastic shooting barrel). I didn't have any mags specific to the HAMR but planned on trying my C-Products stainless 350 Legend mags which allow bullet seating all the way out to 2.325". They've worked perfectly and also opened up room for some bullets not generally recommended by Wilson.
125 Nosler BT and Accubond, and 125 Hornady SST work fine at the above length (in my barrel) and other bullets like the 125 TNT gain a little extra room for powder during load development. I haven't tried it yet, but the extra length might make bullets like the Hornady 150 SST (the "regular" version, not the 300 Savage version) and Nosler 150 BT workable as well. Not sure if their expansion-velocity window is suitable, but might be worth a try.
So far the 125 BT has accounted for 2 coyotes, a black bear, 5 deer and a first year bull moose (neck shot). Has worked perfectly on everything so far.
@Theg_man, Holy Moses Browning! Bear and Moose with the 300 HAM'R! That's rad. I bought and still have both the BT and AB's.. I've even messed around with the AmmoStorageComponents Ammosc.com Stainless mags to get 2.3" and then ultimately went with the C-Products DuraMags Stainless10rd "Open Faced" to get to magwell length of 2.4". Being stainless steel it's strong enough to hold up without the front.. 10rd is pretty much all you'd really need in a hunting or even home defense scenario. It's a rather simple task of opening them up for longer bullets or COL.
For the Hornady #30302 150gr SST in a standard WC barrel with over 2k rounds through it, I got 2.394" (Touching). They'd make a great candidate for the open face mag, or you can see how they do at .069" off of the lands..
For my custom throated McGowen Barrel, 2.414". HAM'R some more critters!

I run 10 rounders as well. 2.5x what my bolt rifles carry and more than enough for all my hunting situations.
I read your posts about opening up the mag and the only reason I haven't is that I'm running a TN arms poly lower. I know the steel magazines bugger up the bullet tips under recoil, so a little concerned about hammering them into the mag well. Poly mags seem fine though, so probably not really warranted (?).
My HAMR is actually a straight pull bolt built on a 300 Solo upper. It only weighs 3# 10oz, so recoil is a little faster than on a heavier gas rifle. Almost as light as my Henry Survival Rifle (22lr). Super nice to carry in the mountains.
I had my Ruger American 350 legend converted to a Ham’r two weeks ago. Conversion kit bought from WC. Scheels installed the barrel and did a terrible job. Scratched up and knarled the barrel nut badly. Out the door the cost was $80
Excited to see how this will shoot. And as 300 Ham’r ammo prices come down I’m considering adding a WC upper tot he mix as well
Haven't been to your site for awhile but was excited to see the ultra-light barrels you're offering in 300 HAMR and 5.56. I remember a post about you testing out a .60" lightweight prototype barrel and glad to see it come to fruition.
Slim chance, I know, but any chance you'll offer the 300 HAMR ultra-light barrel with the 1 in 13 twist? I ask as I use mags that allow long loading as I posted above and use longer bullets not generally recommend or tested in the HAMR and I'm not sure how some of the bullets I use will do in a 1 in 15 twist. Ballistic calculations show some would be marginally stable or maybe even unstable. Won't really know without trying. I know they shoot great out of my 1 in 13 Ranger barrel so would go that route if available. My 1 in 13 Ranger barrel is one of the best shooting barrels I own. Load development has pretty much been find max velocity with a given powder and done.
I am a huge HAM’r and WC fan in general. I own 11 WC guns and certainly don’t mean any negativity but what is the the appeal of the 300 HAM’r in bolt actions? I believe hands down it is the best caliber in the AR-15 platform and have zero desire to buy another AR-15 that isn’t a 300 HAM’r and even am am working on getting rid of non HAM’r ARs I own but in bolt guns there are so many other options that are ballistically superior.
The HAM’r to me is the perfect caliber in the AR because it works in a normal AR with a barrel swap. It is the best caliber that works in the gun IMHO. If you move to a bolt action your options are limitless and it quickly loses its appeal to me at least.

I think the main reasoning for a bolt gun is it's ability to take abuse. In spite of my going to great lengths to baby my AR Ham'r it still gets beat up from time to time riding around in my Polaris. My main use of the Ham'r is on pigs so for me it's a no brainer...with a bolt gun I'm lucky to get more than two at a time but with the AR it's not uncommon to down as many as six before they get out of range.
For me…the appeal is it’s slow, a 30 cal hole, burns less than 30 grains of powder, brass is cheap, very accurate and I love the sound it makes when it hits a pig. I doubt I’d ever use it for anything besides a pig gun. When you look at the other bolt options, most of mine will/would be considerably faster and I know that means rounds can get away from me easier. I’m hunting around populated areas and I need something like the Hamr.
I might hate it once it’s built and continue to use an AR but that’s the appeal for me…I’ve got everything but the reamer and barrel…I’m not doing the Ruger pre-fit because I’m not a fan of nuts.

Any thoughts of Wilson combat making a 300 Ham’R with barnes tsx 130 gr or Nosler 150 gr? while i like the 125 CC the peddling causes a decent amount of meat damage.

We're phasing out all Barnes bullets and I tested the Nosler Partition and it wouldn't reliably expand past 100yds. Lehigh will have our new 125gr Maximum Expansion bullets/ammo out soon that are 100% weight retention similar to a Barnes TSX. There will be two variations, one for 1-12/1-13 bbls and one for 1-15 bbls to optimize performance.
In the meantime, both of the bonded bullet loads kill well with minimal meat damage.
