At one of the parks in Tyler, there is a cat squirrel with a solid white tail. Several of my riding buddies have seen him.

I live close to White Rock Lake in Dallas and there have been several in our neighborhood. We've been there 20yrs and we see them every year.

So.....searching the internet, I find that while quite uncommon...they are certainly not unheard of.

Found a representative picture of what I saw this morning...in case I never see it again and can't photograph it myself.

But I was really taken aback at how bright-white that tail was. Seems it would readily catch the attention of every predator out there.

Yep, that one has a tail as vividly white as the one I saw.

I saw my first solid black one in Arkansas not long ago

We have the black variety where I am....seen plenty of those. Never one with a white tail though.

Looks more like a gray squirrel

Well I'll be dipped in sheep dip. Had never heard o' such a thing. All the squirrels in my neighborhood look like the scallawags they are, digging holes all over my lawn to hide the pecans they have stolen -- and they steal ALL of them from my two trees.

After looking at a photo of the animal, Jordyn Richardson, wildlife outreach technician for the southwest region of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), offered an explanation.

"Gray squirrels come in many colors. Shades of gray are the most common, followed by shades of brown. There are also pure white and pure black squirrels, but both are variations of the gray squirrel," he said.

"White-tailed squirrels are uncommon but locally they can become common. They are not albino squirrels. The color variation can come from a recessive trait that will occasionally appear in the genetic line. If the mother has a white tail, that characteristic is carried to offspring. The color variation is more often seen in gray squirrels."

We only have cat(grey) squirrels on the waterfront at Lake Palestine, Every now and then one will have a reddish blond tail. I have never seen one with a white tail.

I've never see a two tone squirrel. I've seen a few solid black ones over the years though.

Seen hundreds of squirrels, but that's a new one on me.
