Still stumped.

24hp kohler

New plugs
Carb
Gas lines
Fuel pump
Air filter
Coil packs
Oil change

Getting gas to the carb, so fuel is getting to where it needs to be. Double checked gaskets. Still not 100% they are right but he’s been working on it too so not sure what he’s done when I’m not around.

Gotta be something simple. Vacuum lines seem to be good shape, intake good shape. I’m confused at this point and 12 beers later my ideas are probably not ideal for tonight.

Seems to getting fuel air and spark. Can’t figure out how to take the new carb apart but I’m sure without beer involved that wouldn’t be an issue.

So any other ideas? Did find out it was sitting outside for basically the past 2 years. In my opinion there probably needs just a bit more oil but does register on the dip stick.

If I pour gas in the carb it will run so I’m sure compression is there

Drop the fuel bowl and check the float movement up/down and watch for the needle to move up/down.If it has a electric fuel shut-off on the carb it could be bad or no voltage could also be the cause.

Kohler usually puts a sticker on the engine cowl with the Model and Spec number. Post those so I can look the engine up.

I’m leaning towards it being the fuel shut off at this point but didn’t have the right tools with me to take it apart.

Unplug the wire to the shut off valve and use a test light with the key in ON position to make sure there is voltage would be the first thing to check.

Probably need a thinned down 1/2 or sometimes 12mm wrench to take it off.

Yep, if it’ll run when you pour gas down the carb, you have compression, air, and spark. All that’s left has to be fuel supply.

If he carb has adjustment screws make sure they are t bottomed out. I doubt it’s an adjustable carb but if it is 1.5 turns out on slow speed and 3/4 on high speed will probably get it running.

Tried to bring my 8 yo Sears lawn tractor back to life this week after sitting up since last July. New battery, tune up kit, removed and flushed fuel tank, air up the tires, and drain the carb. It ran good enough to mow on Thursday, but only with choke on. Pulled the carb today, removed and cleaned jet and the bowel. Doesn’t run any better. Only part left to change is the electric fuel cut off. For a few more dollars I ordered a replacement carb on EBay today. And it comes with an inline fuel cut valve. Delivery date of late next week.

blockage in the idle circuit, a good soaking and boil will get that. That's why i invested in an ultrasonic cleaner.
sounds counterintuitive but that's what causes many surging/only run on choke issues when the main is clear.

Previous years it would do the same thing, but after running a while it would clear up. And the mower does have a hard life, since it lives outside all year. A bucket of carb cleaner costs about the same as a replacement carb these days. I’ll hold onto the old carb, just in case.

It’s the idle jet. Get a carb kit and replace the jet.

Depending on the model, the idle jet is no longer replaceable, or adjustable. In some cases, not even accessible. EPA ...

Main jet was clear, no other jets were accessible.

There’s bound to be an idle jet in there somewhere. That ultrasound idea sounds pretty good right now.

Ethanol fuel while it sucks for a lot is a decent cleaner. If some fuel is going through a good chance it will clear with some time.

Not long ago I was griping about the wife’s Suzuki ATV needing the choke on to run. We all knew it was that darn idle jet, but I resisted all the work involved in pulling the carb. I tried Seafoam and everything else I could think of or you guys could recommend. Nothing worked, so finally I decided to shed blood and pull the carb and clean the jets. Also ordered a carb kit. It was the idle jet, and I had bought small wires just for the purpose of poking out the plug in the jet. Didn’t work, because the plug was solid. Had to replace the jet, which I had on hand. Runs great now. Blood loss was minimal.

The point is that waiting for it to clear is a slow process even if it ever works. I’d go with a clean idle jet, if it can be found to clean, or a new one. Or Ultrasound. I should probably get an ultrasound at HF just to have around when I need it.

Got my replacement carb delivered today for the Craftsman riding mower. It came with an inline fuel cutoff, that will help out with long term storage issues.
