Sun Valley hasn't been to sunny lately eeks333

Blank are houses up there built a little different to support the extra weight of snow on the roofs?

You will see 2x8s and 2x10s used up north where a 2x6 would be used here. The specs for the underside of a roof for houses built up north is considerably stouter than what you'll see in states without heavy snow.

Trolling? Heck no, I meant every word of it.

Yes, snow load can be severe, even in town. What is really bad is having a couple feet of snow, then getting rain!! The funny part of winter is seeing all the tin sheds people buy, and they get flattened every year. They get another one the next year, and do it all over again!!!

Come on up. Woodstove is lit and the whiskey is poured. OP - that is a whack of snow. We get snow but usually never more than 3 or 4 feet laying on the flat in the bush. In the last 10 years only been one winter where with snowshoes i could get directly onto the roof without a ladder. When it gets to be more than 3 feet deep on the roof i usually drag myself up there and spend an afternoon or two removing it. Bigger issue for me is the cold. -30 or or -40 some days plus wind. Everything takes longer as well, anything you can do in the dry without snow you have to figure on it taking 2 or 3 times longer in deep snow and cold.

Underside of roofs in my neck of the woods are all engineered trusses as opposed to standard lumber and sheeted in 3/4 inch ply also typically minimum pitch is 5:12. Stands up pretty well even to 3 or 4 feet of compacted rain soaked re-frozen snow.

Out to about 30 feet wide, a pre-engineered truss system will carry the load on the outside walls without any problem. Once you get up to these 40-50 foot open concept builds, a single load bearing wall or partition will carry equal amounts of load across the span. Greatest invention in the last 30 years has been these micro-lam beams they use now. 2-3-4 of them, bolted together, will carry incredible amounts of load!!

Now I understand the mass migration to Texas.

Just watched a news clip on FOX news showing a couple of houses blowing up in S Dakota because the gas meters to the house were covered with up to 10' of snow.

Unfortunately they did not elaborate on if the meter was damaged by the weight of the snow which caused the gas leak, or it is not uncommon for small amounts of gas to escape/ seep out around meters and it just built up over time in all of that snow?

Also what would ignite the gas under all of that snow?

Lived in Vermont for 18 months when I was eight to nine years old. One of the Winters was a record for snowfall there. Dad was out of town on work a lot so my brother and I had to regularly get up on the roof and clear the snow off. We also had to keep the driveway cleared.
