I know this gets discussed a lot but who’s running what that is actually lasting. I’ve got a Tacoma that sees a fair amount of miles. Not a lot of towing but it gets used as a truck. I was talked into nitto terra grapplers and I’m at 20-25k and they are not far from done at this point. I figured on a truck this light it should at least see 50k no problem but if I push them another 5-10k I’ll be shocked.

So what’s making some miles. All terrain or mud. And don’t really want anything less aggressive but more is fine. These howl like mud tires anyways so noise isn’t much of a concern.

On a 1/2 ton or smaller I love cooper AT3 tires. Not super aggressive but they wear amazing. I had 70k miles on one set on my Chevy 1500. Lots of gravel and dirt roads seen as well.

Yokohama also doesn’t let me down. Ran my last set of X-AT to 50k miles and probably had another 5k in them. Currently running M/T’s on a 3/4 ton diesel that sees a lot of dirt, gravel, rock, sand….you name it. I’m hell on tires and they hold up well.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Have a Tacoma as well. Ran BFG AT for 35k and they held up great. Still had more than plenty of tread when I sold them. Went to Falken MT. They are doing great as well. Pulled out of boat ramp last month that was slop. 3/4 ton Ford with 20’s on some AT was sitting there spinning tires. He had to stop and put it in 4WD. Idled on by him without a slip.

I can easily get over my head on tires and only have what little bit I remember because I was recently looking through the different ones and sizes. I think a lot could factor in the load rating on the specific tires you had. terra or terra G2s? The XL- 4 ply, C - 6 ply, D - 8 ply, E - 10 ply. The lower rating probably gives a better ride, but the higher rating will last longer from what I can tell. Some of those nittos have different load range choices for otherwise the same tire.

I think I’m just hell on tires anymore. Or they just are not made decently which is possible too.

G2’s which thankfully in my size are discontinued now. Just 4ply on a small truck. I’ve had 8 and 10 ply before and it would probably help but not many options anymore in 265/70/16. Debating a lift and going up to a 17” wheel for better options.

I'm suprised you're getting such poor longevity. I've had a set of terra grapplers, a set of trail grapplers, and am on my 2nd set of ridge grapplers. I had my complaints with the terra grapplers, but longevity wasn't one of them. I'm getting 50k miles out of all of them.

I just got some new Nitto Recon Grapplers and LOVE them compared to the Mickey Thompson M/T’s they replaced. Did great in the ice storm. Only had them about 1k miles but I’d recommend them.

Exactly why I put a 3” lift on mine and went to 265/70/17. I wanted to stay with 16” wheels but there’s only one or two manufacturers that make 16” wheels that will clear the calipers, and they’re not cheap. Buddy went with 6” lift and 35’s but put gears in as well. His is a pavement princess though. I went with AAL and airbags in the rear and new UCA’s in the front. It’s not the smoothest riding but handles truck duties worlds better.

I was pleased with the cooper evolution MT that I have on the Jeep until I rotated last weekend. Seems one tire suddenly started wearing much quicker than the others..in a span of 4,000 miles. 40k out of a mud tire isn’t bad though I guess.

Will go back to the old faithfuls - cooper at3. May try the rugged treks which are a bit more of a compromise between an at tire and a mt.

Tire wear is VERY subjective. Look at any truck forum thread about tires and it's almost like a LF/HF thread on THF. Some people drive like grandpa and some people drive like maniacs. Some people don't know how to drive on ice, snow, or mud. Some people don't know how to drive at all.

On 7,000 lb heavy duty trucks, I've never gotten less than 40k out of a set of tires, and I've just about had them all...BFG KOs, Nitto Terra and Dura Grapplers, Toyo, Goodyear Wranglers, Michelins, BF Goodrich, Bridgestone, etc., etc. I don't baby my trucks, but I don't abuse them either. I use them as a truck...towing hauling, off-road, grocery getting, cross-country... etc.

But I also don't think expecting 50k out of an all-terrain tire is all that realistic. You should be replacing your tires after about six years anyway, regardless of mileage. I think all the major brands produce great tires. It's a Ford vs Chevy thing. Just pick what fits your needs. If you're hell on tires, get ready to replace them every 25-30k.

P.S. I really do like the look of those Recon Grapplers. up

Worst part is it’s mostly commute travel with a little towing but also sees some off-road or realistically more than most normal people. I’ve also gotten 65k out of Toyo mt and sold to an another person that got at least another 20k out of them. I do drive more than a lot of people too and I’m having to replace tires about once a year to maybe a year and a half. Thought maybe had something to do with worn front end components and it checked out 100% good both times I’ve had it looked at so at this point I really don’t know. I know people who can get tons of miles out of the same tires and others that are in my situation.

Michelins, Nittos and now back to Michelins. Should never have gotten away from them. What was I thinking?

My Tacoma and Tundra both came with D rated BFG KO2s. I got 70k out of them without getting to the wear bars. BFGs are not good in the mud but they are tough tires and hold up very well on the deer lease. I was looking at the Cooper Rugged Treks but they were not offered in a D or E in my size. I ran some Cooper ATs on the Tacoma for 25K before I sold it and they looked like they had another 50k in them.

I’m hard on tires, never had a set last more than 40,000 until my current set up.

Toyo Open Country Mt’s last. On my second set now, 35/12.50/20, on a lifted half ton GMC, mostly city driving and pulling a boat probably 35 % of the time. Got 52,000 miles out of first set and have over 40,000 miles currently on second set and could go another 10-15,000 easy.

Terra Grapplers didn’t even last me 40,000 for comparison.

I’ve tried other tires but keep coming back to these. They’re one of the toughest tires on the market and you can expect 50k miles on a half ton.

They excel at nothing but do everything pretty well.

Last two sets of BFG's I've gotten over 80k out of on my half ton. Currently at 50k on third set.

I got a good deal on some Firestone Destination X/T LT285/70R17 E121S in June 2021. I’ve had both the BFGs and Terra Grapplers in the past. BFGs we’re solid, Nitros were good out of the gate but wore out quickly. These Firestone’s seem to be quieter, better in snow/sleet, and longer lasting than both of those. I have ~25K on them so far.

I had Toyo R/T’s that had almost 50k miles trouble free miles on them before I had an alignment problem that wore out the inside tread. I replaced them with BFG KO2’s only because Discount was out of the Toyos at the time and I was impatient. I will say the BFG’s are much better in the rain but I haven’t tested in mud yet.

Look at the tread wear number on the sidewall (small print). I don't buy anything less than 300.
