I’ve never had an opportunity to hunt anything bigger than what a 7-08 can handle until now. I’ve got a chance to go after Eland and Red Stag. Yes, I’m sure a 7-08 will kill them, but recommend me a magnum round.

.300 win mag

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

are you buying this rifle for this hunt only or will you shoot it in any long-range steel fun?

Old School .300 Win

New School 7mmPRC

I take it you are hunting these two in Texas not on a world tour.

IMO, this game living in Texas will not be as "tough" as the wild critters would be.

just my opinion

Building a 300 PRC at the moment. No other experience really. Just figured this way I could finish telling absolutely everyone about my build.

But my son and I are also building a 7 PRC for him as well.

.338 Win Mag I have been shooting one for year's, No tracking is needed on what you're shooting at.

With an upgraded stock, recoil pad, muzzle break, and after-market trigger along with loaded development you'll have a very accurate rifle. Look at the larger bullets 210 & 225 gr. No sense in shooting a Mangum with smaller bullets.
You can also play the long range game with it. I've hit steel @ 1000 yards with mine.

Good luck,

You can hunts Reds reliably as light as a .270win so anything from the .270mags and up you would be fine. Eland might be another story, not sure. My favorite magnum that I own is a .338 win mag in a Browning BAR. Just a fun gun.

Anytime I hear this question, it's always 300 Win Mag. the round hits hard, ammo is easy to get, and plenty of good bullet options from muzzle to 1 mile out.

A 338 Win Mag is also good. But you can't find ammo for it. But, you can take 7 Rem Mag brass and neck it up to .338", and it's ready to load as 338 Win Mag.

I like all of the calibers but shot placement and bullet selection is the key. If you poke a hole in the animals pump, Any 30 caliber will work.

All of my elk have come from a 30-06. And, I’ve never lost one.
Never lost a mule deer.
Never lost an antelope.
Never lost a pig.

But, gotta admit, I’ve lost my share of whitetails; no matter what the caliber. And, I consider myself a pretty good tracker. Especially on my own land. That’s frustrating.

Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP

300WM is the easy button for a magnum hunting rifle. Most people have trouble concentrating when behind anything more than 7mm mag. To get a 300WM recoil down at 7mm mag level, the 300 needs to weigh several pounds more.

I’d go 300 WM or WSM.

I’m in the process of building a 22” 30 Nosler and a 22” 28 Nosler will soon follow for a Nilgai hunt on the King Jan 2024.

I’ve already got a 24” 300wsm and I built it for an axis hunt last June…it’s awesome but I’ve shot 155’s @ 3300. Not big enough wink

Yes, I don’t need much of an excuse to build a gun…it’s part of the fun. Good luck! I don’t hunt unsupressed, I’m addicted to it.
