I picked up a Remington 788 243win today. Has a really nice stock and the metal is really nice condition also. I’d like to find a replacement stock for it that has some checking on for a little better grip. Never really been a Remington guy so any help would be appreciated.

Those are great shooters. If you’re going to keep it forever I would checker it myself or pay someone to do it. If you think you may sell someday, be sure and keep the original stock in original condition.

The 788 is a great budget gun, but not a lot of great stock options. You could look at a ramline, but they are terrible. Option 2 is boyds. I opted to keep the factory stock, bedd it, free float the barrel, and get a Timney trigger.

Actually, don’t do anything to it. I posted before I saw the pics. Learn to like it.

Boyds lists them and can configure how you want. https://www.boydsgunstocks.com

With the original wood looking as good as yours does I would probably get a stock so I could keep it looking that way. I really like the 4 788s I have, but al show some use

Got the same rifle in a carbine. Wouldn't change it.

I’ll probably keep this one. Been looking for a nice 788 for a while. May end up being a cabinet gun but thought if I could find a stock that would work without beating up the one that’s on it would be a positive. My primary Varmint gun now is a 6mm CM but I’m really setup to do 243.

788's are great guns, but regardless of how new looking it is, it's still a working gun. Not pretty enough to be a safe queen.

You are correct. All my guns are tools and will be used. This gun has already been used and has plenty of wear. I’ll use it as it was intended to be used.

I have found wood stocks on ebay occasionally, used in good condition, I took the original off and kept to have for a later sale

I'd find a beater stock that will fit, rough it up good with coarse sandpaper or by other means, and paint it with rough texture truck bed paint. That should make it easy to hang on to...and that way you preserve what appears to be an original in pretty nice shape.

I've owned and/or fired a half dozen or so 788s. The ones chambered in .222 and .223 can be incredibly accurate with a good handload...the two currently in my safe have each fired four consecutive half-MOA groups at 100. The one in .222 will be up for sale before too long. It lives in a Boyd's stock and has a Timney trigger (I'd definitely recommend a Timney for a 788!).

A little fun history on the 788s. They were inexpensively made and meant for the budget market like K-Mart and Gibsons. They were wonderful sellers and excellent shooters. Then they started showing up at rifle competitions and doing quite well. Turns out, these budget guns were taking a big bite out of the Remington 700 line of rifles, their flagship guns which bring a lot more profit. So, the 788 line got dropped.

Every once in a while, often by accident or circumstance, assembled 'cheap' parts have a synergistic component making the whole much more valuable than the sum total of the parts. The 788 is one of those example.

Mine is in .308, BTW.

It is, original from when it was given to me in 1979. I wanted to start using this great shooting rifle pretty hard but wanted to preserve the condition of the stock. One of the guys in the shop grit blasted the beat up donor stock I found on Ebay. I did the rest.

That’s a good looking Boyd’s. I checked out their website yesterday, it’s hard to use with an iPad.

I selected the "Classic" profile when I ordered; it has the finger grooves on the fore end. I wish I'd selected the "Platinum" profile, but it is a nice stock.

Their website kinda sucks for ordering a stock even on a PC. Good luck with that, Jeff!
