Momma got bred late and I was hoping she would hold off for a few weeks but this little fella had other plans. Been checking cows every day and found him this morning, wet and cold and don’t think he sucked. In the truck he went and into the shop. My lady is making a hell of a ranch hand and farm girl.

Keep it in the barn along with electrolytes. Plus scour pills. I don’t have many I have to bring in due to good momma cows and the right bulls, but when I do, we do all we can to save them. Money on the ground.

I left to feed hay to another herd, gone for an hour and she has him dried, cleaned, brushed and sleeping. He just took a full bottle of colostrum replacer and was doing good. I think he will make it. Will take him back to his momma Saturday and see how he does. And you are correct Angus, he is worth Close to that now and will bring good money come fall steer sell off. He will be one of the bigger ones as he is early.

She already did. His name is Smoke. Has named my entire herd. She knows the ranch life though. She cooks the steaks that were made out of a steer she named Waylon. When I ask what’s for dinner, she will say “Waylon” when she cooks any meat from him . She’s a hand.

Our cows must be related. Our first this year was breech and trying to be born in the worst rain and lightning storm of the year. Saved the cow but lost the calf. The rest gave us no issues.

Is that a Charlois/Angus cross? If it is, should be pretty durable...

Ranch I worked on in Colorado always seemed to calve out in the worst weather. Something about cold Temps and a falling barometer made them mommas drop. From mid January through the first of March drove through the herd 5 or six times a throughout the day and night. Most of the time mommas would do their thing but some had to get drenched, always hated doing that. Even my own few dexter cattle did the same. My first heifer dropped a little bull calf in a snow storm, she was a horrible first time momma had to pen em up tight together for three days before she finally really took to him instead looking at him like a new gate.

On the naming thing my boss always named the butcher steer of the year Charlie.

Looks pretty comfortable in that back seat.
