We do not hunt quail on my property if there is another hunt scheduled within 48 to 72 hours.

Has to do with pressure.
The deer are spooked easy as is in late season due to the hunting pressure, dogs running and people in the brush doesnt help that situation.

I love quail as much as the next guy but time just doesnt always allow it.

When I leased, I had my own group and those guys didnt care if I wanted to hunt quail while they hunted deer.

Additionally, if I were a leasee on an MLD place, I might get bent out of shape if quail hunters were pushing through my deer hunting areas. But who hunts quail without dogs anyway? That's a tough project there.

However, I suggest you just keep pushing for good opportunities. Even if some see you as the fly in the ointment, as long as you're playing by the rules, have tight control of your dogs, and stay in the areas as directed, I say go knock some quail down.

Not sure if it will, but I hope this helps.

100% agree with this.
Hell, I'd love to have guy on my MLD lease that bird hunted only and divvied out his portion of the MLD tags available. lmao

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Well I go to back to STX original response as I believe it is pretty much right on. My suspicion is not so much poaching but the pressure and ever looming factor of the word gets out about your beautiful lease and bountiful deer and whola, landowner is approached and offer a lot more money and you lose lease. It happens and one of the reasons many folks no longer share and post pictures. Metadata geeks can easily find out where deer was taken, track down landowner and lease out from under current leaseholder. Seen it first hand two times and both times never even had a chance with landowner as landowner was offered way over going price and took the money without even a phone call discussion with our group (22 year lease and 13 year lease both of which we were paying above going lease rate all ready)

I never new a true quail hunter that hunted with dogs that gave a rats a** about a deer. There’s a saying “ If my dog won’t pick it up, I ain’t shooting it.
As for losing a lease to someone that’s willing to pay more, that’s out of anyone s control. I can get landowners contact info and offer more money, without even stepping foot on the property.

we have quail hunted during the season for years with no impact on the deer - we only do it during the middle of the day - it is a large ranch so that helps

Could be wrong but I've always viewed quail and pheasant hunters as being near the top when it comes to ethics and financial means to enjoy their sport. Anyone who spends several times what a very nice deer rifle costs to buy, train, and raise a good hunting dog is not the poaching type. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if some of them turn their noses up at deer hunters. And I can you assure that few if any will keep and feed a trashy dog that runs deer.

With the advent of GPS/e-collars chances of dogs running deer are slim to none.

I stop leasing out birds hunting on my place… two reasons. I had a deer poached (GW caught them) and had another group catch a CRP field on fire. not worth it. Family and Friends only now

WT leases I prefer no outside bird hunters. Mule deer, absolutely no outside bird hunters. Mule deer Rut is Jan after deer season.
