For you folks who have hot wire around pen, suppose you use a 12-volt battery. Do you use a solar panel to keep the battery up?

For you folks who have hot wire around pen, suppose you use a 12-volt battery. Do you use a solar panel to keep the battery up? You can buy the solar chargers with a battery and panel at places like TSC, some hardware stores and online at Premier1 Fencing.

My thought is if you are going to hot wire something, do it right. Get a real charger and wire it correctly. Otherwise you are just wasting money.
The charger Hud has in his pic is plenty enough for a feed pen

We bought at D&D, but TS and almost any feed store will have them.

The charger Hud has in his pic is plenty enough for a feed pen The ones we use are rated for like 10-15 miles of hot wire. Apparently it hurts enough the cows won’t touch it anymore.

There is a 90 acre area of my lease across a road from our main lease that I hunt. It has only had cows two or three years out of twenty hunting there. Of course the first time they put them in there was right after I put in a small food plot near my stand. The cows were living on it to the point it was not huntable. I did T posts and rebar posts as well as using existing trees to put in an electric fence around about a hundred square yard area. I used a 12 volt unit and deep cycle battery. I ran a single hot wire on top and a second ground wire below it so there would be no delay if they pushed up against it. Various insulators used. Nail on for trees, clamp on for rebar, and T post insulators, and tensioners. Cows never got into my food plot after that. Rolled up the wire and removed the insulators after season and keep it stored as a kit for whenever the rancher plagues me with cows again.
This is what I do on my place, but with a 1 joul solar charger. Use braided wire with a geared reel and it's fast and easy to move around or put up and take down.

it probably helps if the feed pen is bigger. the nearer the cows can get to the feed the harder they will work to get into it. once they know they can get in they are pesky. a 50in panel can be problematic for shooting thru/over bit deer will get in and out no problems.

Also, I'm curious because he doesn't look very big bodied at all. I'm guessing he was just one of those deer with smaller bodies than others and put more into his headgear than body or maybe he was already short in the tooth? We've killed several whitetails over the years that had really, really impressive headgear but yet were much smaller body wise than the average mature bucks on the ranch they were on.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Yup, we've had numerous WT bucks over the years that were the exact same way. Really strange how some will be so much smaller body than others.

With a smaller body to take care of, it is possible the nutritition gets quicker to the antlers without so much body mass to take care of. We've shot 6 1/2 year old deer which dressed over 200 and scored in the 130's. Our honey hole dressed weights are from 155 to 170 and for whatever reason.
