Thoughts?

Impossible to recruit Arch if you don't say stuff like this.

There is absolutely nothing that Ewers did last year with the exception of the OU game that would make a head coach say the QB job is not open for competition. It was the same way last year with Ewers and Hudson Card. I will say Ewers is certainly more battle tested and should be more ready physically to win the job over Arch. Keep in mind, Arch should still be in high school right now.

Best case scenario for Texas is Ewers has a great season with Arch getting a handful of reps. Ewers declares for the 2024 draft and Arch is entrenched as the starter for his sophomore year in 2024.

It will be fun to watch Ewers and Manning compete...this year.

What date does he (Manning) have to decide by concerning red shirting?

He doesn't have to decide by any particular date per se. He can play in up to 4 games during the entire season and still keep his redshirt. If all goes as expected, I don't think Manning will ever be enrolled in college for 5 years, so it probably doesn't matter if he redshirts.

Arch only needs 1 good year. I bet he gets in 3 or 4 games this year and saves his redshirt.

Sark says that every year he doesn't want anybody to be complacent.

And I agree about Manning keeping his red shirt

I agree with the concept. And agree with the competition. But I would have kept that to the team only.
Including the fans could be a problem. Especially if Ewers struggles early.

I agree that the competition makes Ewers better and makes Arch feel more confident. I would just keep that to the team and staff at this point.

Arch is only 17.

In this day and age I wouldn’t care about redshirting someone. If they can contribute they would play. I could see Manning taking over and Ewers seeing the bench. Don’t even see Ewers entering the portal either. No one is gonna pay what he is making at Texas.

If Arch doesn't play, he will be gone. That is what has tobe so frustrating about college coaching. Arch commits to go to UT, but even after he gets there, if he doesn't play, he can enter the portal and be a long gone Sally. These players have the coaches by the short hairs. Who wants to juggle the feelings of a teen for a living?

Yes and no until they hit a rough patch and approach .500 record, Year 3 of the Sark project and coming off an Alamo Bowl loss to U Wash. They start slow or struggle, the rats will go frantic looking for the QB savior.

Big 12 Champs. That was an impressive performance against Kansas in essentially a road game for Texas. Probably still a 2-seed, but maybe a 1. That’s the first time since 2000 that Kansas has lost twice in the same season to the same opponent by 15+ points.

What a defensive performance tonight. When the surprise announcement that Disu was hurt, that was a huge let down. But the Horns came out and dominated from start to finish. What a beat down. With Alabama and Houston losing tonight, Texas is the highest seeded team left. They have everything in front of them, but Miami is playing really well. I’m seriously thinking about driving up to Kansas City with my boys tomorrow to watch the game on Sunday.

Scrimmage hard to judge. I don’t know who is out, if it’s good offense or bad defense. Arch probably playing with a second team. He has made some good passes. Missed a few open guys. I can tell Arch likes to roll out.

Doing good for a guy who should be in high school. But may have more overall reps/experience than Ewers.
