270 Winchester is the top selling caliber in the US has been for years. Still is according to ammo manufacturing numbers. Texas is included in that number. I know that 270 win is also Academy’s number 1 seller as well as virtually every large dealer in the state.
Could you sight the source for your statement of fact?

As much as I love my quarter bores, I will have to say .308 or 7.08

I have most of the calibers mentioned here except the 308. No difference in it and the 30-06 re performance. The deer were dead or not recovered without respect to the cartridge. Nothing kills them deader. I hand load.
I have used and still own: 222, 223, 243, 30-30 and 30-06, 38-40 and some more that I don’t hunt with.

Same here, though my shots are consistently <150 yards. If I had 300+ yard shots it would be a 7mm or 300 magnum.

Really can’t go wrong with 308 or 270. Thinking I might have to snatch a 7mm-08 though from all the comments.

Little dated (2015) but according to Chuck Hawks - my guess is 270 has not gained since than: USA (Averaged 2015 sales rank) 1. 223 Remington 2.. 308 Winchester 3. .30-06 Springfield 4. .30-30 Winchester 5. .270 Winchester 6. .243 Winchester 7. 7mm Remington Magnum 8. .300 Winchester Magnum 9. 7.62x39mm Soviet 10. .22-250 Remington Source: https://chuckhawks.com/best_selling_rifle_cartridges.htm

And I bet 7.62X39 has moved up some places.
Gonna be a long time before .223 and .308 get unseated.

I don't understand why this has to be brought up every year. If you can afford to hunt multiple locations in Texas for multiple species...you can afford a second damn rifle.
