Did anyone else happen to notice the double rifle one of the characters in the new Taylor Sheridan series "1923" was using to hunt big game in Africa? While I've never laid eyes on one myself, I did happen to catch a recent TV show that showed very high-end models are still being made in Europe. Like those very expensive watches, I take it these have become more of a showpiece firearm than anything else.

Classic Double Rifle

Dan, Krieghoff rifles as well as several other companies firearms are functional works of art. We have a talented member of this forum that does some great looking double riffles and some members that shoot and hunt with those and other double rifles.

Take a look at this beauty in of all things 25acp. https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/8509197

If you look back in this forum you can find some pics of members with double rifles used in hunting and several shotgun to double rifle conversions by member TDK.

If I ever win the lottery I will be talking to TDK about one or two custom double rifles.

That said they do make for an interesting BBQ gun. Probably most are not shot that often but there are some that do see some use and wear their battle scars with pride.

Go to thesafarimarketplace.com and put double rifles in the search bar. Double rifles are still very prevalent among safari hunters.

You are correct, Sir...and while Aaron Michael Little may be young(er) in years, he's a whiz at building doubles. He's built the .25 ACP you referred to, I've held the work-in-progress .700 he built for another gentleman, and he's taken a Victor Sarasqueta 28 bore and converted it to an "everyday" double in .30-30 for me!

While the double rifle concept (two powerful shots without having to manipulate any cycling mechanism) is essentially African, they can be just as "at home" here for people who appreciate getting themselves CLOSE to the game that they hunt (as 100 yards is starting to be a long poke for two barrels built to hit one point of aim). Two cases in point:

If I won the lottery what I would want to build a double 357 Maximum. My place most of the shots are inside 80 yards so a double would be fun and I like your sight setup on that 30-30.

That would be an awesome set-up!

Truth be told, if I had it to do over again, I might do a .38-55. Or a .30-40. Or a .303. Rimmed medium bores are plentiful and perfect for this application!

Why not a .348 Winchester, if we’re going to be retro about it?

Go to the Dallas safari Club Convention next weekend. You will see and handle all the Double Guns you want. Or Houston couple weeks later if Houston is closer.

It's just a Giant toy convention for outdoorsman.

218, were you able to secure that Marlin in the trading section?

Few do, but that one has got me interested badly

I did. We'll arrange a meeting next week to close the deal.

I used to have a William Evans double in 450/400 3 1/4 Nitro Express. It was made in 1898 for a minor member of the royal family. This was a hammer gun and was fully engraved. In a fit of extreme stupidity I sold it. This is the only picture I have left of it and was one of the pics I used when I advertised it.

This is the rifle I regret selling the most.

If you have or want a 348 Winchester, I do not have one but have bunch of new/(old) Winchester brass and Barnes original bullets for it.

That would be a fun thumper round for a double.

I would entertain the 38-55, I have a Little Sharps in it already that I love to shoot. The man that built it at Little Sharps said it was a special order that he put a .375 barrel on so the standard .377 loads will have a bit more than normal and run about like .375 Winchester velocity and they do. Or just shoot 375 Winchester from it as his Daughter does hers for bear and elk.

I can certainly understand your regret...that is stunning (and a proper English double at that!). Not to mention the grand caliber choice...one that does 95% of what the stompers do but with far more tolerable recoil.

The .38-55 has become a favorite caliber of mine (I've three rifles so chambered). Accurate, flexible, pleasant to shoot...what's not to love?

Mr. Bee, the .38-55 is a wonderful cartridge. I wish I had not sold my Marlin 336 Cowboy in that caliber.
Texas Dan, if you want to approximate the double rifle experience without taking out a second mortgage, consider a Kodiak percussion double from Pedersoli. I have had them in .58 and .72, and the former is the livelier of the two. These typically "regulate" in a fist-sized group at 75 yards or so. And you can load them up and down to suit your fancy. A 550-grain conical running at 1400 or so is not to be dismissed.

I always thought a double in 30-40 Krag regulated with 220 gr bullets would be a great heavy timber elk gun.

I know you are not to shoot 375 Win in a 38-55 but the man that built my Rifle Ron Otto from Little Sharps Rifle company and I talked and he said it is fine in my rifle. the rifle actually as a .375 barrel on it. He said if I wanted more from it send it to him and he would chamber it to 38-3 1/4 but I figured brass might be an issue in the future for that. He said his Daughter just uses 375 Winchester loads in hers built like mine is. Modern falling block action and barrel pressure not an issue for 375 Win in it.

348 Win I bet is a good one and nothing in North America that could not be taken with it that I know of. I actually have a quite a bit of New/old Winchester brass and original barns bullets for the 348 Win that I should I guess get rid of to someone that ill use it or get a rifle

I'll never go to Africa for dangerous game, but that don't mean a fellow can't enjoy a double rifle.

I've managed to snag three doubles in the last couple years.

[Linked Image]

My first, this Merkel 141 in 8 x 57R. If I'm not mistaken, the 141's are built on a 28 gauge frame and are svelte shooters. It has been a learning experience. This one has a single trigger. The right barrel fires first, and the inertia of the recoil cocks the firing pin for the left barrel

Merkels are not set up for RMR's but somehow Gordy's found adapter plates for the Merkel's and I had them mount a Trijicon 2 MOA dot.

[Linked Image]

Here is the first target of opportunity for the 8 x 57R @ +/- 65 paces.

I know if you have to ask you probably can’t afford it, but how many digits are we talking to get a double?

My second double is also a Merkel 141.

[Linked Image]

It is chambered for the 30-06 Springfield.

[Linked Image]

This rifle has double triggers.

[Linked Image]

I happen to like that more as one can load either the same or two different load combo's, and the right barrel does not always fire first.

Ya!

$1000-$300,000+. But $5k-$15k is a good range.
